Brinstar is a starter stage. Announced at E3 2001, It has a central platform and 2 smaller platforms on either side of the stage, as well as a top one. This would make a good tourney stage, but attacking the things supporting the side platforms causes them to slant downwards and rendering them fairly useless. You can also attack a certain section of the main platform (a hole filled with mines), and hitting it enough times causes the stage to seperate. Also, acid occasionally rises up, causing minor damage to anyone who touches it and causing the bottom pit to be filled. The acid has 4 levels: way below the main platform, slightly below the main platform, above the main platform, and above the side platforms. The top platform is always safe.

This is Samus's stage. She fights on it in Classic Mode and Adventure Mode. She also fights on it in All-Star Mode with anyone with her.
Brinstar is the default Metroid stage that first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee.  This stage is based after a section of Samus' homeworld, Zebes.  This stage has a base platform, two sides held by fleshy stalk-like poles, and a hovering metallic platform.  There is another fleshy substance in the middle of the base platform that holds the stage together. The main obstacle is a ocean of acid in the background which occasionally surfaces and will burn opponents. There is also a lone Chozo statue in the background which occasionally gets up and walks around. The fleshy stalk-like poles and substance can be destroyed to separate the platforms and break the stage in half.

It returns in Brawl as Melee Stages: Brinstar.
