Unlike most other attacks Pokémon use in Super Smash Bros. games, Thunder Jolt is not the name of an attack also used in the Pokémon RPGs. It has been speculated that "Thunder Jolt" is a misnomer and that the attack's actual name is supposed to be "Thundershock", the basic Electric attack in the RPGs, but "Thunder Jolt" is the official name given to Pikachu and Pichu's Neutral-B attack in the Nintendo Power Player's Guide for Melee. The original set of Pokemon trading cards had a Pikachu card that had Thunder Jolt as its basic attack. The most likely explanation is that is was taken from there for SSB and it stuck throughout the series.

Thunder Jolt was, however, present on the original Pikachu card as one of the many moves invented for the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The name of the move in the Smash Bros. games likely arose either from the popularity of the trading cards at the time of SSB or from a mistranslation of "Thundershock," the name of a standard Pikachu move in the RPGs.

Use this ground hugging projectile attack while standing and jumping. It also damages Pichu to use it (1%), however.
Thunder Jolt is fairly unique for a projectile attack in that it hugs the ground it travels on, climbing up and over any obstacles. When used in the air, a ball of electricity is launched that falls diagonally until it hits a solid object, where it assumes the normal arc form.

If used on a ledge or in the air, the shock will become a ball and travel diagonally until it reaches something solid (Item, Enemy, Platform, etc). While ball-shaped, this attack does slightly more damage.
Like its other specials, Thunder Jolt damages Pichu upon use, inflicting 1% damage each time.

This Move is also good for spamming heavy characters and fast falling ones like Ike and Fox respectively.

Thunder Jolt is Pikachu and Pichu's Neutral B move.

Unlike most other attacks Pokémon use in the Super Smash Bros. games, there has never been an attack named Thunder Jolt in any Pokémon video game.

Thunder Jolt is fairly unique for a projectile attack in that it hugs the ground it travels on, climbing up and over any obstacles. When used in the air, a ball of electricity is launched that falls diagonally until it hits a solid object, where it assumes the normal arc form.

Like its other specials, Thunder Jolt damages Pichu upon use, inflicting 1% damage each time.

While ball-shaped, this attack does slightly more damage.

This move is also good for spamming heavy characters and fast falling ones like Ike and Fox respectively.
