The Hammer is an item that appears in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee. It may appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however it is not certain whether the Golden Hammer will replace it, or whether it will be just an upgraded Hammer. When a character picks up a hammer, they swing it in their hands until it disappears after a few seconds. A short tune also plays whenever the hammer is grabbed. Getting hit by a swinging hammer results in massive damage and great knockback. When a character is holding a hammer, they lose the ability to use other attacks, run, or mid-air jump. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the head of the hammer has a 10% chance of coming off when the hammer is picked up. When a hammer head has come off, players may use it as a throwing item. In matches where bonuses are awarded, the "Headless Hammer" bonus is given to any player who picked up a hammer and the head came off.
