Skill Super Smash Bros. Brawl Competitive Smasher

Sylvan is an Australian smasher. He is known for maining Roy. Because Roy does not appear in Brawl, much of Sylvan's time is spent deciding how to emulate Roy's playstyle using other characters with similar traits. Sylvan still sticks loyally to Roy, retaining his Wi-Fi up taunt (the only taunt button in Melee) as the quote "In memory of Roy". Sylvan has been known to claim that his main in Brawl is Roy and that the moment he stops maining Roy, is the moment he stops playing Smash. As such, he has taken great lengths to emulate his Melee Roy playstyle, into Brawl characters.

Sylvan is a member of Australian Avengers. The Australian Avengers are a clan on VGDistrict (Formerly Nintendo Hub Forums, originally Brawl Central)

Brawl Main[edit]

Due to Roy not being included in Brawl, Sylvan began by playing Pikachu until the Australian release of the game. After this Sylvan picked up Wolf, claiming that Wolf plays more like Roy with his weight and power ratio. He played the Green and Gold Wolf costume as this colour scheme is consistent with the Australian national colours.

Recently, Sylvan has been playing as Jigglypuff. Jigglypuff does not inherit many of Roy's traits, but it dose have three similar aspects. B across can be used as a recovery, a chargeable neutral B move and most importantly, B down.

Sylvan's signature move with Roy is the use of his Counter for a kill move. Many claim Ike as the successor to Roy, however Ike's counter is extremely slow, and very weak. Using a fresh counter, Ike is unlikely to KO an opponent. This combination made Ike an unsuitable character for Sylvans play style.

The other Fire Emblem candidate, Marth, retains almost the same style of play as in Melee. Sylvan did not use Marth in Melee, and as such migrating to Marth in Brawl would contradict the idea that his main is Roy.

Lucario is another character that Sylvan considered, with double team acting in place of counter. However, double team is much slower than Roy's counter and is greatly affected by gravity. This makes it unsuitable for many of Sylvans strategies, such as his aerial counter.

Jigglypuff, surprisingly, has a reliable B down counter. Rest can be a reliable kill move at roughly the same percentage as Roy's counter. It has a much higher priority than Roy's counter, even working against grabs, but has a smaller hitbox and greatly larger ending lag. Sylvan has been known to call this move "All-or-nothing Counter".

Play Style[edit]

Sylvan bases his play style largely on the use of predictable Smash attacks or B moves. The idea is to deal enough damage, while trying to bait the opponent into a false sense of security. From there he will often use a counter to strike the opponent's strongest move. He is also know to roll a great deal, often he will use rolls again to bait enemies.

Because he puts a great deal of his play into baiting opponents, his moves can come off as predictable and stale. The actual result of being predictable, is trying to force the opponent to approach in a fashion that leaves them open to a counter.

With Roy, Sylvan has been known to last entire battles by crouching, since from that position he can either counter, smash attack or down tilt. From this position, the opponent is given no warning as to which option Sylvan will take, making it much more difficult to approach him. This tactic does not work against projectile weapons.
