In Super Smash Bros., some characters are referred to as "model swap characters".
There are fourteen basic characters and five hidden characters, but there are also variations of characters who are in the corner of the character selection screen, that come to appear beyond the character selection frame.
During development, we thought we could only create 16 characters, no matter how hard we tried.
But, the fans also wanted more characters in the fight. So, we saved programming and animation time by giving characters the exact same special moves and movement of another character, but with a different appearance and feel.
Like how Luigi is based on Mario.
How to unlock:
Clear Event 37: "Legendary Pokémon".
Or play over 200 Melees.
