Pokemon are referred to by gender-neutral pronouns in Smash stuff consistently with only one exception, as opposed to R.O.B. who frequently gets male pronouns. He was a robot designed to be male, technically speaking, he's genderless, but he is "male." It's like when a kid names their pet rock "Leo" or something.
