Model origins[edit]

This is speculative so I didn't want to put it in the article yet, but the conclusion I last reached is that they're not from a specific game, but are standardized 3D models made by Sega around 2006/7 for internal reference and outside licensing. These models appeared on the Sonic Channel in 2007 (which is the typical source of "standard" cross-series artwork, and we know for a fact was the source material for 4 and Ultimate) and I further believe were the source material for the Olympics series, various other spinoffs (e.g. Rivals 2's key art), and eventually Unleashed/Generations. Sega became more serious about the series and characters having a more unified 3D aesthetic at the time and especially needed HD-ready models for the switch to HD development. During 06, they famously overestimated the Wii's processing power and had to change course, which led to the development of Secret Rings - and would explain why the models in Brawl and Secret Rings appear to be higher-res models that have been downscaled. I think this would also provide better origin coverage for the characters who were not in that game. Back to the first Olympics, we not only know it and Sonic's appearance in Brawl emerged from the same conversations and overlapped timeline-wise, but nearly every character with a trophy in Brawl did appear in that game, some like Eggman virtually-identical. The two that don't, Jet and Silver, do have unused models on the disc, which further supports that these are models Nintendo and Sega likely would have been directly exchanging in some way during the time. Again, this is all speculative and not something I think we'd ever get a clear answer on, but I believe this is the explanation that makes sense. --Flippy (talk) 13:04, September 6, 2026 (UTC)
