Shellcreepers emerge from the pipes on the upper portion of the stages and move from one side to the other. They can be defeated either by being hit from below or is turned upside-down by the [[POW Block]], after which they can be kicked off-screen. If the Shellcreepers are not defeated while flipped upside down, they take their shell off, put it upright, and put it back on, after which they change color and moves faster.

The initial design of Koopa Troopas in NES ''Mario'' games was quadrupedal like Shellcreepers, but the former would become bipedal starting in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Super Mario World}}'', with a brief return to a quadrupedal build in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Super Mario Galaxy}}''. Shellcreepers' only appearances following the 1980s have been through the original pixel graphics from ''Mario Bros.'', with remakes and replicas of ''Mario Bros.'' such as ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Clash}}'' and ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Bros. Classic}}'' replacing them with spiked creatures such as [[Lakitu & Spinies|Spinies]] to communicate to players unfamiliar with the original that they cannot be stomped. However, ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Power Tennis}}'' contains unused graphics of a 3-dimensional Shellcreeper, which was to appear identical to the quadrupedal Koopa Troopas seen later in ''Galaxy''.
