The project was publicly launched on June 18th, 2018, but had been in a "private beta" since February of that year. The initial release featured automatically saved replays and detailed match statistics. On June 22nd, 2020, an update was released for the custom Slippi Dolphin build that would introduce [[Wikipedia:GGPO|rollback netcode]] and integrated matchmaking into the game.<ref>[https://twitter.com/Fizzi36/status/1275096470765490176 Rollback netcode announcement]</ref> This became a major breakthrough in the competitive ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' community ,as distance-based latency would no longer be an issue. Due to the [[COVID-19 pandemic]], most in-person tournament activity had been completely shut down since March 2020, and Project Slippi became the dominant method of playing ''Melee'', with major tournament organizers hosting events using the new updates. Project Slippi has since been credited with bringing new players into the competitive ''Melee'' scene, due to its ease of access and ability to provide practice against anyone online. This widespread adoption became an issue for [[The Big House Online]], whose entrants were essentially forced to use the software to play ''Melee'' in an online environment. [[Nintendo]] then sent a cease and desist letter to the event claiming that Project Slippi is infringing on their copyrights. While Nintendo has yet to actually prove Project Slippi infringes their copyright in a court of law, their action was enough to cancel the entire event, which in turn started the #FreeMelee movement.

On December 17th, 2023, Fizzi announced that he would be flying out {{Sm|Akir}}, {{Sm|Krudo}}, {{Sm|Abbe}}, and {{Sm|Sock}} (four prolific players of Slippi's ranked mode) to {{Trn|GENESIS X}}.
