The Fire Flower made its debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' They pop out of ? Blocks when Mario or Luigi are in their Super states. Once obtained, they become Fire Mario / Luigi and can toss fireballs, projectiles that are fired diagonally downwards and bounce off the ground. Fireballs are very efficient at clearing out enemies quickly, being the only way to defeat underwater enemies and providing an easier time during Bowser fights.
The Fire Flower made its debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' and has become an important recurring item in later ''Mario'' games. They are flowers with red and yellow petals, and a white face with simple eyes. It allows the player who touched it to have their clothes turn mostly white and shoot fireballs at enemies. It has since appeared in nearly every ''Mario'' game.

The Fire Flower has underwent a lot of visual changes within the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series. In ''Super Smash Bros.'', the Fire Flower's design is based on the design from ''Super Mario Bros.'' In ''[[Melee]]'', it has an unique design modeled after a {{s|wikipedia|daisy}}. From ''[[Brawl]]'' onwards, the Fire Flower's design is based on the design from ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros.}}'', which became its standardized look. In ''Ultimate'', the fire looks more cartoony than in previous games.
The Fire Flower has become a recurring item in the ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Kart|series}}'' series and serves as the logo for the {{s|mariowiki|Flower Cup}}. When used, it allows the player to throw a limited number of fireballs.

While holding down the attack button, the Fire Flower spits a stream of fire. Holding the attack button will lead to longer attack times. The flames can be shot for a combined seven seconds and inflict up to 44% damage altogether. While characters could not move while using the item in the first two games, shooting items were later changed in ''Brawl'' as to allowing running and jumping while shooting such items, including the Fire Flower. While the flower can be thrown when it runs out of flames to fire, it cannot KO at any percentage, though it does inflict a burning hitbox. The Fire Flower's flames are considered to be both [[reflection|reflectable]] and [[absorption|absorbable]].

In ''Melee,'' the Fire Flower can be used to cause the [[Ice Climbers on fire glitch]], which causes [[Ice Climbers (SSBM)|the partner Climber]] to continuously release fire effects.

*In ''Smash 64'', level 5 and above CPUs will never use a Fire Flower against Fox or Ness, as Fox can reflect the flames and Ness can absorb them. Instead, they will always throw the Fire Flower at them.

*In the ''Smash'' games, Mario and Luigi are both capable of throwing fireballs without the need of a Fire Flower.
*The design of the Fire Flower in ''SSB4'' and ''Ultimate'' is slightly different from its standard design; specifically, the outer red band of the flower is larger than usual. This is likely to make the item more visible from a far distance.
