'''Gargantuans''' is the 25th [[event match]] of the 51 event matches in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]''. 

The player controls [[Giant Bowser]] in a [[stock]] match against [[Giant Donkey Kong]] on the [[Fourside]] stage, where the player starts with 1 stock while Giant Donkey Kong starts off with 2 stocks. A tiny CPU {{SSBM|Mario}} and tiny {{SSBM|Peach}} also appear; however, due to their tiny size, they do not attack and are easily [[KO]]'d. This event match does not feature a time limit. Giant Donkey Kong's [[artificial intelligence]] is set at Level 9, while the tiny CPU Mario and Peach's artificial intelligence is set at Level 8.

When this match starts, Giant Bowser will spawn on the soft platform at the right side of the stage, while Giant Donkey Kong will spawn on the rightmost platform of the stage, the tiny Mario will spawn on the top of the skyscraper in the center of the sage, and Peach will spawn on the platform to the right of the center of the stage. Giant Donkey Kong will also [[self-destruct]] between the two buildings on the right side of the stage. Giant Bowser can also survive at high damage (around 200%-999% damage) due to their size and knockback reduction modifiers when damaged by Giant Donkey Kong. The tiny Mario and Peach do not need to be KO'd to clear the event match.

*This event match is an homage to the ''{{s|wikipedia|kaiju}}'' film genre, which centers around giant monsters. The tiny Mario and Peach represent the helpless citizens in those films, with their smaller-than-normal size reflecting the size difference between the humans and the kaiju. The Fourside stage references the main setting of most giant monster movies and ''kaiju'' films, which often take place in a large city setting. 
**This event match is likely a reference to the 1962 film, ''{{s|wikipedia|King Kong vs. Godzilla}}''. Giant Bowser represents {{s|wikipedia|Godzilla}}, a giant reptilian monster originating from Japan, and Giant Donkey Kong represents {{s|wikipedia|King Kong}}, a giant ape monster originating from the United States.  Ironically, despite the player using Giant Bowser to KO Giant Donkey Kong, in the film, King Kong emerges victorious from the final battle against Godzilla.
**This event match's name is a reference to the size of Giant Bowser and Giant Donkey Kong, as well as a reference to the 1966 ''kaiju'' film, ''{{s|wikipedia|The War of the Gargantuas}}'', otherwise known in Japan as ''Frankenstein's Monsters: Sanda Vs. Gaira''. Giant Donkey Kong represents the brown Gargantua, Sanda, while Giant Bowser represents the green Gargantua, Gaira. Ironically, despite Sanda serving as the protagonist Gargantua and Gaira serving as the antagonistic Gargantua, in this event match, the roles are reversed, so the green Gargantua is the protagonist while the brown one is the antagonist.
