Duon's name is derived from the Latin word ''duo'', a word meaning ''twosome'' or a group of two, alluding to its dual design.

When {{SSBB|Snake}}, {{SSBB|Lucario}} and {{SSBB|Meta Knight}} attempt to dispose of all the [[False character|false]] {{SSBB|Mr. Game & Watch}}es in the [[Halberd#Role in the Subspace Emissary|Halberd]]'s control room, they fall onto the ship's deck and dissolve into [[Shadow Bug]]s, which form into Duon, a last resort to defend the Halberd. The monster is confronted by Snake, Lucario, {{SSBB|Fox}}, {{SSBB|Zelda}}/{{SSBB|Sheik}}, {{SSBB|Peach}}, and {{SSBB|Falco}}, while Meta Knight stays behind to retake his ship. The boss battle makes up the entirety of the [[Battleship Halberd Bridge]] level. After Duon is defeated, it dissolves into Shadow Bugs and leaves behind the trophy of Mr. Game & Watch, who joins the group after Peach revives him.

Duon later reappears in [[The Great Maze]] and is refought by the playable characters.

Duon is a two-sided robot on a set of wheels that bear a representation of the {{iw|wikipedia|yin and yang}} symbol on the faces; one half of the robot is pink and has a cannon atop that head and smaller cannons on its arms, and the other half is blue with a pair of blades for arms and a curved blade on its head. Duon rotates 180 degrees to switch between either side and change its attack strategy. Both sides have shoulder exhaust pipes which can fire missiles (pink side) or mines (blue side). There is an invisible platform between Duon's halves, making it one of only two bosses that a [[fighter]] can actually stand on, the other being [[Porky Minch]].

In Duon's defeat animation, it starts leaking [[Shadow Bug]]s while it spins around and shrinks for a few seconds, after which Duon's halves collapse on the ground.

The jump goes farther across the field on higher difficulties, which, ironically, makes it easier to avoid. If the player is hit by Duon in the fall, they will sustain enormous vertical knockback. If the player stands on Duon during this move, they will be inflicted vertical knockback with high KO power just before the jump lands. In some situations it is possible to be hit by both the body and side hitboxes at the same time. All of the falling hits deal 30% shield damage. The quake hitbox only affects grounded players and deals 40% shield damage. The wheel while braking deals 15% shield damage.

It also pushes down the character if they are below the ledge, effectively negating many non-tether-based recoveries and gimping many fighters. Also, if the player stands on Duon, they will always be sucked in by the attack, suffering the maximum damage and knockback. The multihits deal 3% shield damage while the final hit deals 20% shield damage.

|Duon moves its non-weapon arm back to shoot four homing missiles. The missiles can be directed to hit Duon itself, inflicting very high damage. Although only one of the hitboxes is programmed to deal friendly fire, either one can damage Duon, sometimes both at the same time. On lower difficulties in Boss Battles, all four missiles redirected to Duon can nearly KO the boss. The missiles can be detonated with vertical-ranged attacks or thrown items. The missiles are very powerful with enough power to KO under 50% on Intense difficulty. The higher the difficulty, the longer the homing time is&mdash;below Normal the missiles do not have enough time to curve back towards Duon. It is always followed by a "shared attack".

The beams themselves are extremely powerful, being able to KO around 30%. The beams' high speed and piercing ability, as well as the unpredictable beginning, make this attack extremely dangerous.

In [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]], Duon is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by [[Galeem]] during his takeover of the universe. Duon's spirit is located in the [[Base]] sub-dungeon of [[The Light Realm]].

Duon's Spirit Battle uses a [[giant]] {{SSBU|Ice Climbers}} puppet fighter starting off with a [[Super Scope]], referencing Duon's dual sides and the pink side's built-in laser blasters, and is fought on the [[Halberd]] stage's ship deck layout. During the battle, Shooting Type items will appear, further referencing the shooting attacks.

*Duon is the only [[boss]] that can hurt itself without the aid of [[items]] or a [[Reflection|reflector]].
*It is possible to stand on Duon, between the two heads, although this serves little practical application as Duon still has attacks that can hit the player in this position, while the space for the player to maneuver on is very limited.
