The controls test stage or customization test stage is a basic stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. that allows players to test their set custom controls character customizations. As such, it cannot be selected in Versus mode. In the controls test version, only Mario is playable. In the customization test version, the player can test any fighter they are customizing.
Controls test is a basic stage that allows players to test their set custom controls. As such, it cannot be selected in Versus mode. It also shares a similarity with Custom stage tests, in that Mario is the only character that can be used on it.

The stage consists of a single flat strip of terrain with a simple texture. On either side of the stage is an invisible wall that prevents the player from reaching the blast lines. These walls can be wall jumped from and wall clinged on, but do not interact with projectiles. In Brawl, it is not possible for the player to be KO'd on the test stage under normal circumstances, as the only character available, Mario, cannot clear the walls and lacks any self-damaging attacks to launch himself with. In Smash 4, an invisible ceiling just above the camera boundary ensures that no fighter is able to reach any blast line.
Controls test stage consists solely of one grounded platform, using the same texture as the Online Practice Stage, and two invisible, blank walls at either side, which can be wall jumped from. This also means that the blast lines at either side are completely inaccessible. The top blast line is accessible, though as Mario does not have any moves capable of damaging himself, he cannot be KO'd without a hack to access the stage in a Versus mode.

On the controls test stage, pressing buttons will cause a small notice to appear on screen, containing an icon for button and its currently assigned function. In for3ds, controls can be customized using the bottom screen while the player is in the test stage. In Brawl and forwiiu, controls are set on a separate screen. In Ultimate, a Sandbag was added to the stage.
When the player presses a button(s), a small notice will appear in the top right corner, containing an icon for the button, as well as its function.

On the customization test stage, a Sandbag is present for the player to test out their attacks on, and its damage is displayed on screen. The Sandbag's damage percentage will reset to zero if it does not sustain any damage for a few seconds. Due to the invisible walls, the Sandbag cannot be knocked out of bounds as on the Online Practice Stage. In Brawl and Smash 4, the Sandbag can not be grabbed due to it being an item (in Ultimate it can be grabbed) and other conditional moves such as counterattacks can't be tested as it doesn't attack. In addition, the Sandbag may have different knockback mechanics from some attacks in comparison to a regular fighter being hit by them, so comboing may be inhibited at times. In Ultimate, the player's damage percentage is displayed at the bottom if a Spirit Team is being tested.

Trivia
*In for Wii Us customization test stage, if the player damages themselves significantly enough with self damaging moves (i.e. Toon Link's Short-Fused Bombs) and knocks themselves back towards either bottom corner of the room, the audience can be heard gasping collectively.
*In Ultimates customization test stage, Hero can perform Kamikazee without KOing himself. When done, he will still shine and Sandbag will be damaged if it is close to the player, but the explosion sound and visuals will not occur, the shine will dissipate, and Hero will remain in the Kamikazee pose for a moment before suddenly landing on the ground (as he is in the air for a brief moment after usage).
