{{s|metroidwiki|Kraid}} first appeared in ''{{iw|metroidwiki|Metroid|game}}'' as a boss and as the boss for {{s|metroidwiki|Brinstar}} in ''[[Super Metroid]]''. However, his appearance in ''Super Metroid'' was dramatically changed and remained as such in ''{{s|metroidwiki|Metroid: Zero Mission}}''. Kraid's appearance in this stage is based on his character design in ''Super Metroid''. The stage itself, however, bears no resemblance to his lair in either game. The name of the stage is a reference to the proximity of Kraid's lair being deep below Brinstar in ''Metroid''.

Prior to ''Melee'' - and by extension ''Ultimate'', Kraid was never shown to have lava tolerance within the ''Metroid'' series. This trait would be carried over into ''{{s|metroidwiki|Metroid Dread}}'', where he is imprisoned by the {{s|metroidwiki|Mawkin}} in a lava filled cell deep within the depths of {{s|metroidwiki|ZDR}} in the caverns of {{s|metroidwiki|Cataris}}. However, his tolerance is not as exaggerated as it is in ''Smash'' - he's only shown to be able to withstand it up to his feet, as he's incinerated after falling deeper into the lava upon being defeated.
