Pyrosphere (パイロスフィア, Pyrosphere) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The stage is set in the Pyrosphere area of Metroid: Other M.

Overview

The main body of the Pyrosphere stage is fairly long aerial platform with a metallic surface. Above it float four platforms, arranged in a parallelogram shape. These platforms are also metallic, with a strip of green along the side. The lava appears pouring in the background, but doesn't affect the playing area.

As the stage boss, Ridley attacks players, but if he receives enough damage, he can be recruited as an ally of one of the playable characters. It is also possible for him to transform into Meta Ridley, and ultimately defeating him counts as a point. FG II-Grahams, Joulions, and Zeros appear as enemies on the stage, as well.

On Miiverse, Masahiro Sakurai provided a caption when revealing the stage, which reads "An enemy from Samus's past may appear at any second…" On the April 8, 2014 Nintendo Direct, the shadow of Ridley could be seen chasing Pikachu, providing even more evidence of Ridley appearing, though Ridley himself - sans a small part of his tail - was not directly seen. Ridley's role as a stage boss was ultimately confirmed in the October 2014 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza.

Pyrosphere is a significant area in Metroid: Other M. The stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is based on the area of Pyrosphere, named the Geothermal Power Plant, that Samus Aran would encounter and battle the newly-cloned Ridley. This area's appearance in Other M is mostly the same as it is in Smash 4; the bridge that Ridley burns down, the magma-eruption port that Samus destroys to light the area, and the hole in the wall that Ridley creates while escaping are all in their post-battle state in Smash 4, though the hole has been moved slightly to the right and there is another hole to the right of the door for unknown reasons. Also, the four floating platforms of the stage are not present in Other M.

The main platform is used in the Omega form. Ridley, smaller platforms and other hazards do not appear.

Glitches

• There is a glitch where when Ridley is about to dive onto the stage, a Dragoon attack will make Ridley function in the background instead of the foreground. However, fireballs and platforms act normally. The player can only defeat Ridley by using a Dragoon.

• Added 8-player mode version of the stage (already had an 8-player omega form). This version of Pyrosphere removes Ridley and other stage hazards.

Trivia

• Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the second fighting game to feature the Pyrosphere as a stage. Because Team Ninja helped develop Other M, they were able to include a Pyrosphere stage in Dead or Alive: Dimensions using the name "Geothermal Power Plant". It resembled the Super Smash Bros. stage, but lacked the floating platforms and featured Samus, alongside Ridley as a stage hazard.
  • Consequently, Pyrosphere is also one of four stages in the Super Smash Bros. series to be featured as a stage in fighting games outside of the Super Smash Bros. series, the others being Boxing Ring, Green Hill Zone, and Suzaku Castle.
