Sonic (ソニック) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was announced during the Nintendo Direct in October, in celebration of Sonic Lost World being released in the same month. He is the first 3rd party character in the game to be a veteran. His appearance is slightly based off of his Modern model in Sonic Generations, and whereas Sonic's model in Brawl showed him with a centered mouth, his mouth is now on the side of his face, reminiscent of his non-Smash appearances. The official website also refers to Sonic by his full name Sonic the Hedgehog.

Roger Craig Smith, who voiced Sonic since 2010, will reprise his role in Smash 4, although most, if not all, of Sonic's voice clips are reused from Sonic Generations and other past Sonic titles since Smith has started voicing him. Sonic is also voiced by a different voice actor in the PAL versions (depending on the region).

Changes from Brawl

Sonic was overall buffed from Brawl to Smash 4, having most of his attacks made stronger and some made more useful.

  • Buff Spring Jump's spring now lingers on after it hits a foe.
    • Buff Sonic can now auto-sweetspot after some time after use, making it a safer recovery.
  • Buff Dash attack now transitions into a rolling kick.
  • Buff Forward tilt is noted to have more KO power.
  • Buff Forward smash has also been buffed.
  • Buff Up smash is much stronger.
  • Buff Back aerial deals more damage, now dealing 15% as opposed to 13%.
  • Buff Forward throw and Back throw are improved. They deal more knockback to the point where it can KO reliably.
  • Buff Down aerial is now a meteor smash.
    • Nerf It deals slightly less damage.
  • Buff Homing Attack has less start-up lag.
    • Buff It also has higher knockback.
      • Nerf However, it deals less damage and can only be used once unless it hits an opponent nerfing one of his great recovery options.
  • Nerf Super Sonic appears to be weaker, dealing less damage and knockback.
  • Nerf Up tilt has one less hit and deals less damage.
  • Nerf Up throw and forward aerial both deal half the damage they dealt in Brawl.
  • Change Neutral aerial now has a bluish sphere around it for the duration of the move.
  • Change Spin Dash now appears to have the same flashing charge animation that Spin Charge uses.
  • Change Down smash has been changed to a splitting kick, similar to that of Fox.
    • Buff This attack has become much faster.
  • Change Sonic has much more variety with his palette swaps in Smash 4; new colours include a light blue and white.
  • Change Attacks which involve spinning emit a lower-pitched sound effect, similar to that heard in Sonic Lost World.
  • Change Some of Sonic's attacks produce more visualized lighting effects.
  • The following moves are visually unchanged:
    • Neutral attack combo (Two punches and a kick)
    • Up tilt
    • Down tilt
    • Up aerial
    • Up Smash
    • Forward throw
    • Back throw
    • Spin Charge
    • Up taunt
    • Sonic retains the ability to wall jump.

Sonic
The main star of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He's an easygoing hedgehog who blows past the competition with his speed. Seriously, on the ground he's faster than anyone else in Smash Bros. Use this to your advantage, avoiding blows while landing lightning-fast attacks.
Sonic (All-Star)
Sonic's up special Spring Jump lets him reach great heights by jumping on a spring, becoming invincible for a moment. He can't use any other specials during the jump, but he can attack or dodge. This move's great for returning from a long launch. Other fighters can use the spring, though!

Trivia

  • Sonic dashes so fast, that if one were to customize Sonic with all speed-based equipment, then combine that with a Bunny Hood and Superspicy Curry, he can actually outrun the train in Spirit Tracks.
