Brawl proved to be very compeititve in the advanced matchups, with many matches going right down to the wire. The final match to determine 1st place came down to the final KO hit with both Erick's Falco and [[Kulla]]'s Metaknight well over 100% damage. Both were tipped from the beginning to rank very highly, and the first major brawl tournament may have started a new and hotly contested rivallry between the best players from Sydney and Melbourne, injecting some much needed vitality into the national scene. Adelaide's Hybrid was somewhat of a dark horse, proving difficult for most players, including taking out [[CAOTIC]]. Seasoned Melbourne Brawlers [[Redact]] and [[Dekar]] proved that they could hold up well in a major national, leaving little to surprise.

Revision as of 14:07, May 4, 2008

Rambo was held in Melbourne University's Old Arts Hall on 26 April 2008, in conjunction with the Couch Warriors Committee and the Manifest Committee. It was directed by CAOTIC and assisted by Myst Walker, Strider, Shaz, Blazey and others. Overall attendance surpassed 100 throughout the day as players converged to play Street Fighter: 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core, and Casual Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The official Rambo attendance stood at 62. The tournament was heralded as a success, but was plagued by the incorporation of Melee and Brawl, offering 4 different tournaments for entrants. Handling the transitions between Melee and Brawl proved a major obstacle for many players, and led to considerable delays in Rambo's schedule. As a result, the Swiss System suffered a cut in rounds (from 6 to 5 for Brawl), which led to inconsistencies in the system's ranking project. Nonetheless, the Swiss System was still aptly able to determine the standout players for both Melee and Brawl, with tournament host CAOTIC taking 1st place in Melee and Sydney resident Kulla to take the 1st place for Brawl - a first major victory for Sydney's Smash Community.

Rambo's administration welcomed some new changes not before seen in Australian Smash - most notably pre-registeration and online payments. This helped to save valuable time during the event. The total prize pool stood over $800, which was given a welcome boost from Strider's 'Smash Bank.'

Super Smash Bros. Melee Report

Singles

1st - CAOTIC (Victoria)
2nd - Dekar (Victoria)
3rd - Jaz (New South Wales)
4th - Shaz (Victoria)
5th - Kupo (Victoria)

Super Smash Bros. Melee was the first game to be run at Rambo, which showed continued support from players and spectators, depsite the impending interest in the newer, fresher, Brawl. Suprrise results included Melee veteran and Yoshi expert Bringer of Death struggling to poll into the finals due to Swiss defeats by Sloth and Kulla. Jaz pulled stunning victories against many players, including CAOTIC, who was expected by many spectators to lose the match, only to be given a self-destructing repreive by Jaz. Jigglypuff main Dekar, following on from his stellar run from Adelaide's Reloaded Festival 08, was just as impressive, winning a championship set to produce a deciding set. The great Melee vetrans Kupo (better known as the 'Husband' slaying Emily), and Shaz (voted Australia's overall best smasher of 2007), managed to rank respectably high.

Melee's finals drew large spectator crowds and sent a strong message that the game is still alive and strong. Despite observations that overall skill levels for the game have slightly deteriorated, it brought about a large scale atmosphere and vibe that Brawl has yet to produce in its tournaments.

Teams

  1. CAOTIC + Shaz (Victoria)
  2. Berimbau + Kulla (New South Wales)
  3. Kupo + Sloth (Victoria + Queensland)
  4. CATS + Bringer of Death (Victoria + Western Australia)
  5. Dekar + Turtle (Victoria + New South Wales)
  6. Hybrid + Daltsy (South Australia + British Columbia)

Melee's Teams tournament was a hotly contested event which brought about several high tier combinations. Sydney's top team proved to be one of the strongest teams, taking out positions 3 and 4, and narrowly losing to Melbourne's top Melee team in a deciding championship set. Dekar and Turtle represented the TEC Clan well (an elite Australian community specialising in Wi-Fi) and Hybrid and Daltsy proved that even the most random combinations on the planet (Adelaide and Vancouver?) can pull rank.

The most expensive post-Smash Tournament ever

The night following Rambo would go down as one of the most unforgettable nights in Australian Smash, most likely due to the amount of things that went wrong. It wasn't the dinner at the Chinese Restaurant where we had the function room to ourselves. That was bliss. Nor was it the live music bar nestled in Fitzroy. It all started within the paper-thin walls of the Greenhouse Backpackers, the hostel where most of the interstate guests were staying at in Flinders Lane. So, most of the fellas didn't warm up to the bar fully - many were just knackered - it was 2.30am. Catching a maxi-cab back to the CBD rose our spirits, as Daltsy made it clear he didn't want to spend his last day in Melbourne doing bugger all. When we arrived at our hostel, he went to his room and revelealed his secret stash of goon. The following hour ensured good times had by all in room 4.17. But being 3am, rooms 4.16 and 4.18 were not so happy. Thus, the hostel manager crashed our party of singing and talking **** and asked for our security cards as a check (there was over 10 people in the room and only 5 beds, and guests are not allowed after 11pm). "Are you guys pissed?" Turtle (positively intoxicated) collapses from the top bunk onto the floor, breaks the bunk rail, rebounded onto CAOTIC's laptop, abruptly shutting off the tunes and says "I'm OK, I'm OK!" (I'm sure he broke his ***) Subsequently, most of the guys were kicked out of the hostel, with nowhere to go, no bed to sleep in. But we all had something to drink so we were happy. Everyone with beds passed out at 4am, and the bedless crew decided to rough it out until daybreak. Adam made a makeshift bed in his car at the Crown parking lot and took Hybrid with him (and received remarks from strangers passing his car), Stu did a Xeno and wondered off into the grid-based urban jungle, calling for a manhunt (coordinated by Jaz and SAM, of all people). The rest were quite comfortable staying in the hostel lobby because Melbourne's notoriously moody weather. And they continued to drink the last cups of goon. Unreon got sent to Southern X Station by Sam and almost missed his flight. Daybreak hits, the legitimate hostel guests wake up, and Sam replaces them in their beds at 7am. plenty of people have a hangover.

So why was this expensive? Jei Jei's car got broken into at the Crown parking lot and lost over $1000 worth of goods - Wii, Brawl, DS R4, Laptop. Turtle's luggage was also lost in the process, leaving only the clothes on his back to return home to Wollongong. Sam returned to Glen Waverley only to discover his laptop screen was crumbled. The signs posted throughout the hostel were almost taunting us with the tag "This is a Big City - secure your belongings at all times." They didn't make Underbelly or Canal Road for nothing.

If Post-Rambo taught any lesson for Smashers, it's that despite everything going pear-shaped, a giant 2-D Mario on the street can still make us happy.

A J-Fund tournament will be hosted soon in order to help Jei replace some of his stolen goods because Cao is a hero like that <3
