"ROY" is a label listed for a package of unfinished programming found within the code of Super Smash Bros. Brawl when hacking the game disc. Because of the name, many speculate it as being proof that Roy from the Japan-only GBA game Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, who also previously appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a playable character, was once planned to return as such in Brawl. While entirely possible, it can only be considered speculation as the programmed code contains no information indicating it as such. A common theory is that it was the result of imported data from Melee brought over for referential purposes by the programmers. An often overlooked possibility is that it wasn't in reference to the Fire Emblem character at all and that the name is actually in reference to a completely different "Roy" (such as Roy Campbell of the Metal Gear series, among others). Because the programming is incomplete, none of these theories have been proved or disproved either way, and likely never will be unless the developers clarify the matter.
