Despite the fact that this would cause numerous problems, I think the character part could be like the wi-fi thing, when they make a new one, you can either keep one or replace yours with the new one. It has to be kept to one character or it would cause a character selection screen to look like those shopped ones that have like 100 characters and make it look very dirty.
