Classic Mode follows a very simple formula: all eligible fighters for giant fights are the females, and all eligible fighters for multi-man fights are the males; the only exceptions, respectively, are Roy and Jigglypuff. Roy is the only male eligible for giant fights, and Jigglypuff is the only eligible female for multi-man fights; thus, they are both the only characters to be eligible for all battle types.

Classic Mode stages

  • Stage 1: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
  • Stage 2: 2 vs 2 (ally is chosen at random from a list of allies while the team the player is fighting is randomly picked from a list of 29 teams)
  • Stage 3: Target Test
  • Stage 4: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
  • Stage 5: 3 vs 1 Giant Character (2 allies chosen at random from a list of allies while a giant character is chosen out of a list of giant characters randomly)
  • Stage 6: Snag the Trophies
  • Stage 7: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
  • Stage 8: 1 vs 10 of the same character/copies of two or more characters that add up to 10 (teams are chosen at random out of a list of multi-man characters)
  • Stage 9: Race to the Finish
  • Stage 10: 1 vs 1 Metal character (opponent chosen at random from a list of 1-on-1 characters)
  • Stage 11: 1 vs Master Hand and sometimes Crazy Hand if certain conditions are met.

Battle types

Normal battle

During the basic 1-on-1 fights, the player will be pitted against a randomly chosen opponent. All characters are eligible to participate in the ordinary 1-on-1 fights. During the battle against Roy on Battlefield, the Fire Emblem track plays. During the fight against Shadow on Final Destination, the alternate track Multi-Man Melee 2 occurs.

Team battle

During a 2-vs-2 fight, the player will fight a team of two chosen opponents, while having a selected ally alongside to assist. Teams of two opponents that the player fights alongside an ally are predetermined by the game. On Very Hard, the first opponent will switch to their fourth palette swap. A list below states the two opponents for each team and the stage they are fought on. During the battle against Roy + Lucina, the Fire Emblem track plays. During the battle against Sonic + Shadow and Sonic + Knuckles, the Emerald Hill Zone theme occurs. During the battle against Jigglypuff + Tails, the Deserted Beach track will play. During the battle against Shadow + Roy, the Fire Emblem track can be selected as the alternate track.

Allies

Every playable character can participate in the team and giant fights as allies to assist the player against the opponent(s). During team fights, the player will be granted one ally, and during giant fights, two allies. In the team fights, the ally will switch to his/her second palette swap, and in giant fights, the first ally will switch to his/her third palette swap while the second switches to his/her second palette swap.

Giant battle

A giant-sized character randomly chosen from a predetermined list will fight the player in stage 5. Similar to team fights, giant fights offer allies for the player when fighting the opponent, except that instead of one, the player is granted two. Additionally, like with the teams, the giant characters the player fights alongside two allies in stage 5 are selected at random from a predetermined list from the game, similar to the 2-vs-2 teams. Only the female fighters are eligible for this battle type; none of the males can be fought. The only exception is Roy, being the only eligible male; during the fight against him, the Fire Emblem track plays.

Multi-man battle

In a multi-man battle, the player, by him/herself, fights a randomly chosen character, similar to giant fights; however, the opponent will appear as 10 duplicates. Like the team and giant fights, characters for a multi-man fight are picked randomly from a list predetermined by the game. During the battle against Roy, the Fire Emblem track plays. In a similar vein to the giant fight in stage 5, only the male characters are eligible for the multi-man fight, with none of the females being possible to fight. The only exception is Jigglypuff, where she is the only eligible female.

Trivia

  • Teams Jigglypuff + Tails and Roy + Jigglypuff are the only teams that are fought on stages that none of the opponents of each team have as home stages, being fought on Battlefield and Final Destination, respectively.
    • The relationship between Roy and Jigglypuff can be understood, as they are the only two characters to be eligible for all battle types. The relationship between Jigglypuff + Tails (other than that they are good friends), however, is not very clear.
