Power Stars first appeared in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 64}}'', and act as collectibles that [[Mario]] is required to obtain in order to access more levels. These stars also appear again in the remake ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 64 DS}}'', ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Galaxy}}'', and ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Galaxy 2}}'', but the Power Stars were replaced by {{s|mariowiki|Shine Sprites}} in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Sunshine}}''. The number of total stars that the player can collect in each of these four game varies; ''Super Mario 64'' has a total of 120 stars, its DS remake made a increase of 30 stars which brings the total to 150 stars, and both ''Super Mario Galaxy'' and ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' each have a total of 242 stars (the former has 121 stars each for Mario and [[Luigi]] to collect, and the latter has 122 normal stars and 120 additional {{s|mariowiki|Green Stars}}).
