Classic Mode follows a very simple formula: all eligible fighters for giant fights are the females, and all eligible fighters for multi-man fights are the males; the only exceptions, respectively, are Roy and Jigglypuff. Roy is the only male eligible; thus, they are both the only characters to be eligible for all battle types.

Classic Mode is a 1-player mode in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The player chooses a single character, stock, and difficulty level, then battles through 11 different stages, culminating in a final battle with Master Hand. In addition to standard battles, three bonus rounds are also included, allowing for players to further increase their score and potentially gain other rewards from the mode. If the player loses all of their stock, they can potentially continue, assuming their supply of gold allows for it.
Classic Mode stages
*Stage 1: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
*Stage 2: 2 vs 2 (ally is chosen at random from a list of allies while the team the player is fighting is randomly picked from a list of 29 teams)
*Stage 3: Target Test
*Stage 4: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
*Stage 5: 3 vs 1 Giant Character (2 allies chosen at random from a list of allies while a giant character is chosen out of a list of giant characters randomly)
*Stage 6: Snag the Trophies
*Stage 7: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
*Stage 8: 1 vs 10 of the same character/copies of two or more characters that add up to 10 (teams are chosen at random out of a list of multi-man characters)
*Stage 9: Race to the Finish
*Stage 10: 1 vs 1 Metal character (opponent chosen at random from a list of 1-on-1 characters)
*Stage 11: 1 vs Master Hand and sometimes Crazy Hand if certain conditions are met.

While Classic Mode does have a fixed order concerning the themes of battles and the presence of bonus rounds, the characters the player may fight against or fight alongside of are randomised from a pool of characters; furthermore, the player's selected character will be excluded from inclusion as an opponent or ally.
Battle types
Normal battle
Completing Classic Mode can yield a variety of rewards for the player, alongside all gold awarded for completing the various stages. The player's score is also recorded, assuming it has surpassed the previous high score for the character.
During the basic 1-on-1 fights, the player will be pitted against a randomly chosen opponent. All characters are eligible to participate in the ordinary 1-on-1 fights. During the battle against Roy on Battlefield, the Fire Emblem track plays. During the fight against Shadow on Final Destination, the alternate track Multi-Man Melee 2 occurs.

Stage 3
The first bonus stage is Target Test, where the player is tasked with breaking all ten targets in their character's target test within two minutes. Failing to break all ten targets will not cost the player any stock, though they will lose out on potential end-of-game bonuses.

Stage 4
This stage is a 1 vs. 1 Regular Battle. There is a 5 minute time limit.

Stage 6
The second bonus stage is Snag the Trophies, where players are tasked with preventing three trophies from falling off the stage. The player is awarded any trophy they rescue, and getting all three yields an end-of-game bonus. The stage ends in failure if none of the trophies are saved, if players fall of the stage, or if the two minute time limit expires.

Stage 7
This stage is a 1 vs. 1 Regular Battle. There is a 5 minute time limit.

Stage 8
This stage is a 1 vs. 10 Multi-Character Battle, similar to the Yoshi Team and Kirby Team battles from the original game. There is a 5 minute time limit.
{{Melee1PCPUData

Stage 9
The final bonus stage is Race to the Finish, where players have to race through an obstacle course within a varied time limit. The farther the player makes it through Race to the Finish, the more points and coins they receive; getting KO'd at any point, however, prevents them from gaining either.

Stage 10
This stage is a 1 vs. 1 Metal Battle, similar to the Metal Mario battle from the original game. There is a 5 minute time limit.

The battle always takes place on Battlefield, and no items appear in this stage.

Stage 11
Classic Mode's final battle takes place on Final Destination, against Master Hand.

Unlike all other foes previously fought, the player has to defeat Master Hand by lowering his HP to 0, instead of knocking him off the ledge of the stage.

Master Hand's HP varies on the difficulty selected by the player, with higher difficulties causing him to have higher HP values.
{| class="wikitable"
| Difficulty level || Master Hand's HP

If the player is playing on Normal difficulty or higher and has made it to the final stage within 5 minutes and 50 seconds, then Crazy Hand will spawn when half of Master Hand's HP has been depleted. Crazy Hand's starting HP also depends on the difficulty, matching what Master Hand's was at the start of the match.

Beating Master Hand and, if applicable, Crazy Hand, finishes the mode. After the screen fades to white and the final results screen is shown to the player, a small cinematic plays, showing their selected character dropping into the Collection room turning into a trophy and displaying all other character trophies they have attained in the mode. The credits then play, followed by a small cinematic and Congratulations image for the player's selected character.

Types of battles
Regular battle
All characters except Ganondorf, Roy, and Mr. Game & Watch are eligible to fight the player throughout the mode's three 1-on-1 battles, with their home stages listed below. In this mode, neither Poké Floats nor any Past Stages are used. In Stage 1 on Very Hard Difficulty, the opponent will wear its third alternative costume. In Stage 7 on Hard or Very hard, the computer will usually try to avoid the player at all costs, sometimes by walking off the screen. During the fight with Mewtwo, the theme for Poké Floats will play. During the fight with Marth, the Fire Emblem theme will play. During a fight with Young Link, Saria's Song will play. As for the fight with Yoshi, the Yoshi's Story stage has the theme for the Yoshi's Island 64 stage as its alternate music.

2 vs. 2 teams
Team battle
Below is the list of all the teams the player can fight in Classic Mode. Both the characters for each team and the stage fought on is listed. There are a total of 29 teams. All playable characters aside from Zelda/Sheik and Roy can fight alongside the player. Allies all use their first alternate costume. On Very Hard Difficulty, the first opponent wears its third alternative costume. When fighting a team of Mario and Bowser on Battlefield, the theme for Princess Peach's Castle plays.
During a 2-vs-2 fight, the player will fight a team of two chosen opponents, while having a selected ally alongside to assist. Teams of two opponents that the player fights alongside an ally are predetermined by the game. On Very Hard, the first opponent will switch to their fourth palette swap. A list below states the two opponents for each team and the stage they are fought on. During the battle against Roy + Lucina, the Fire Emblem track plays. During the battle against Sonic + Shadow and Sonic + Knuckles, the Emerald Hill Zone theme occurs. During the battle against Jigglypuff + Tails, the Deserted Beach track will play. During the battle against Shadow + Roy, the Fire Emblem track can be selected as the alternate track.

Allies
Every playable character can participate in the team and giant fights as allies to assist the player against the opponent(s). During team fights, the player will be granted one ally, and during giant fights, two allies. In the team fights, the ally will switch to his/her second palette swap, and in giant fights, the first ally will switch to his/her third palette swap while the second switches to his/her second palette swap.

Giant battle
Giant battle
Just like the teams, the giant characters the player fights are picked randomly from a group that has already been predetermined by the game. All playable characters aside from Zelda/Sheik and Roy can fight alongside the player. The first ally uses the second alternate costume, while the second uses the first alternate costume. Interestingly, this list includes every single Mario character overall, including sub-series (but oddly, not Peach). During the battle against Giant Young Link, Saria's Song plays.
A giant-sized character randomly chosen from a predetermined list will fight the player in stage 5. Similar to team fights, giant fights offer allies for the player when fighting the opponent, except that instead of one, the player is granted two. Additionally, like with the teams, the giant characters the player fights alongside two allies in stage 5 are selected at random from a predetermined list from the game, similar to the 2-vs-2 teams. Only the female fighters are eligible for this battle type; none of the males can be fought. The only exception is Roy, being the only eligible male; during the fight against him, the Fire Emblem track plays.

Multi-character battle
Multi-man battle
Just like the teams, and the giant characters the player fights, the multiple-character fight is picked randomly from a group that has already been predetermined by the game. This level consists of 10 multiples of 1 of 9 different characters. During the battle against 10 Donkey Kongs at Jungle Japes, the theme for Kongo Jungle plays.
In a multi-man battle, the player, by him/herself, fights a randomly chosen character, similar to giant fights; however, the opponent will appear as 10 duplicates. Like the team and giant fights, characters for a multi-man fight are picked randomly from a list predetermined by the game. During the battle against Roy, the Fire Emblem track plays. In a similar vein to the giant fight in stage 5, only the male characters are eligible for the multi-man fight, with none of the females being possible to fight. The only exception is Jigglypuff, where she is the only eligible female.

Revision as of 13:04, April 20, 2018

Classic Mode follows a very simple formula: all eligible fighters for giant fights are the females, and all eligible fighters for multi-man fights are the males; the only exceptions, respectively, are Roy and Jigglypuff. Roy is the only male eligible; thus, they are both the only characters to be eligible for all battle types.

Classic Mode stages

 • Stage 1: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
 • Stage 2: 2 vs 2 (ally is chosen at random from a list of allies while the team the player is fighting is randomly picked from a list of 29 teams)
 • Stage 3: Target Test
 • Stage 4: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
 • Stage 5: 3 vs 1 Giant Character (2 allies chosen at random from a list of allies while a giant character is chosen out of a list of giant characters randomly)
 • Stage 6: Snag the Trophies
 • Stage 7: 1 vs 1 (opponent chosen at random from a list of characters)
 • Stage 8: 1 vs 10 of the same character/copies of two or more characters that add up to 10 (teams are chosen at random out of a list of multi-man characters)
 • Stage 9: Race to the Finish
 • Stage 10: 1 vs 1 Metal character (opponent chosen at random from a list of 1-on-1 characters)
 • Stage 11: 1 vs Master Hand and sometimes Crazy Hand if certain conditions are met.

Battle types

Normal battle

During the basic 1-on-1 fights, the player will be pitted against a randomly chosen opponent. All characters are eligible to participate in the ordinary 1-on-1 fights. During the battle against Roy on Battlefield, the Fire Emblem track plays. During the fight against Shadow on Final Destination, the alternate track Multi-Man Melee 2 occurs.

Team battle

A giant-sized character randomly chosen from a predetermined list will fight the player in stage 5. Similar to team fights, giant fights offer allies for the player when fighting the opponent, except that instead of one, the player is granted two. Additionally, like with the teams, the giant characters the player fights alongside two allies in stage 5 are selected at random from a predetermined list from the game, similar to the 2-vs-2 teams. Only the female fighters are eligible for this battle type; none of the males can be fought. The only exception is Roy, being the only eligible male; during the fight against him, the Fire Emblem track plays.

Multi-man battle

In a multi-man battle, the player, by him/herself, fights a randomly chosen character, similar to giant fights; however, the opponent will appear as 10 duplicates. Like the team and giant fights, characters for a multi-man fight are picked randomly from a list predetermined by the game. During the battle against Roy, the Fire Emblem track plays. In a similar vein to the giant fight in stage 5, only the male characters are eligible for the multi-man fight, with none of the females being possible to fight. The only exception is Jigglypuff, where she is the only eligible female.
