Mid-tiers often resemble meta-relevant characters. These characters are typically somewhat unpopular compared to other, better characters, but often have respectable representations and qualities to make them a respectable threat in competition.

Low-tier characters are often seen as non-viable, "irrelevant" characters. While they typically have a few strengths to keep them from remaining completely irrelevant, they are often seldom used in competitive play due to their overwhelming weaknesses. These characters are typically ranked in the D or E tier, but a few tier lists opt instead to regard them as mid-tier characters, such as in ''Smash 4''{{'}}s official tier list.

Bottom-tier characters are also sometimes to signify characters that are significantly worst than the rest of the cast, and have virtually zero hope of ever seeing widespread tournament use. A few tier lists decide to do away with the bottom-tier, as the characters in that specific game may not be that much worse than the other low-tiers, such as in ''Smash 64''{{'}}s tier list, and ''Ultimate''{{'}}s first tier list. In most tier lists, these characters are typically ranked in the F-tier or lower.
