Pitfalls made their first appearance in ''[[nookipedia:Animal Crossing|Animal Crossing]]'' and later appeared in ''[[nookipedia:Animal Crossing: Wild World|Animal Crossing: Wild World]]''. In both ''Animal Crossing'' and ''Wild World'', Pitfalls are somewhat rare items that can be found around town. Pitfalls are used to pull "pranks" on other townsfolk by burying it and waiting for the animal to walk by. When the animal walks over it, he or she falls and gets temporarily stuck in that spot. The player can also fall into his or her own Pitfall. In ''Brawl'' and ''SSB4'', the Pitfall can be picked up and thrown at either an opponent or at the ground. If the player throws it at an opponent, the person becomes stuck temporarily and is unable to move. When a Pitfall is thrown at the ground, a person can become stuck by moving over it.
In all games in the ''Animal Crossing'' series, pitfall seeds are items that can be found buried in the ground. If the player or an animal walks over a buried pitfall seed, they will fall and be temporarily stuck in a hole. Players can dig up pitfall seeds and rebury them elsewhere, making it possible to pull "pranks" by setting traps for animals or other players to fall into.{{clrl}}

The Pitfall used as a meteor smash.

The Pitfall (おとしあなのタネ, Pitfall Seed) is an item that appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4. It hails from the Animal Crossing series. When thrown, the Pitfall bounces off walls until it touches the ground, which it then embeds itself into with no trace, but will disappear with a puff of smoke after a few minutes. Unless the opponent is invincible, the next enemy to walk onto its location will sustain damage and become buried. Characters on a hard platform will remain buried for the normal duration as determined by their damage, though characters on a soft/fall-through platform will be spiked downwards through the platform after the "being buried" animation has finished. This also happens when the item is thrown at a grounded enemy. When thrown at an airborne enemy, the target is meteor smashed.

Origin

A player finds a Pitfall Seed in Animal Crossing: Wild World.

In all games in the Animal Crossing series, pitfall seeds are items that can be found buried in the ground. If the player or an animal walks over a buried pitfall seed, they will fall and be temporarily stuck in a hole. Players can dig up pitfall seeds and rebury them elsewhere, making it possible to pull "pranks" by setting traps for animals or other players to fall into.

Trophy

The Pitfall item appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl. It is obtained by completing 100-Man Brawl with any character.

Pitfall
A tricky little item you can bury. Any player who passes over it will drop into a hole. If you land in a pitfall, move the Control Stick quickly back and forth to escape, because until you do, you're completely defenseless. In Animal Crossing, this item also dropped passersby into holes. It was a thrill to bury one and wait for a visiting pal to stumble across it.

Nintendo DS: Animal Crossing: Wild World

Trivia

  • If Wario strikes a buried Pitfall while riding on his Wario Bike (and is not wheelieing or taunting), he will be sent flying for an instant KO. This is due to how Wario is considered grounded despite being unable to be buried or plunged, and so he takes the full effect of the planted Pitfall's fixed knockback value of a ludicrous 300 (designed for a long bury time).
