Less commonly, the term "veteran" can also denote the "eight regulars" or "perfect-attendance fighters", which are the eight starter characters in the original Super Smash Bros. which have been in all subsequent games of the series. The "perfect attendance" part of the term is a reference to the fact that these eight fighters have always been available from the start of every game without needing to be unlocked. The terms originated in the description for the 10th Brawl event match All-Star Battle Regulars, reading: "The Smash Bros. perfect-attendance crew! Fight the eight regulars in order!" A popular, unofficial term referring to this group is "The Original 8" (Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu), which may also be called "The Original 12" if including the four unlockable characters (Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff). The 29th Brawl event match All-Star Semifinal Regulars states: "Four hidden characters from the past game! They're secret perfect attendees." forwiiu is the only installment where all the "Original 12" are starter characters. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate refers to the concept of the perfect-attendance crew by making the only starter characters the aforementioned "Original 8".

In competitive play
Generally, all players are allowed to pick any available character on the selection screen. This is done in the interest of a healthy metagame that encourages as diverse a competitive scene as possible. That being said, there have been a few notable complications with this practice over the years. The most obvious asterisk is that as the metagame develops, some characters will inevitably be deemed better than others, and the competitive scene usually devolves into top players picking the "best" characters in order to get the easiest chance of winning. There will always be exceptions, but this has historically been the rule. Some characters have also directly caused the banning of stages, like the traps set by Snake and Isabelle causing stage that conceal the ground such as Windy Hill Zone to be removed from the legal stage list. There have also occasionally been gripes about specific costumes blending in with certain stages, though there has been no documented case of this directly causing a ban. Smash 4 specifically had an major issue with its custom moves causing incredibly overpowered movesets, forcing all but the standard moves to be banned.
Also, a few characters have been explicitly banned from competitive play at various points in the history of Smash. These include Meta Knight in Brawl, Cloud and Bayonetta in Smash 4, and Hero and Steve in Ultimate. Granted, none of these examples are as severe as they seem to be. Meta Knight has not been banned since 2012, only one teammate is allowed to pick Cloud in a doubles match, Bayonetta and Hero have only been banned at smaller tournaments, and the legality of Steve is still being contested and reviewed. Playable characters not available on the selection screen like Master Hand are also banned due to Master Hand glitch|the methods of selecting them]].
