Charizard, also known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl in a sense; he is one of three Pokémon who are played through Pokémon Trainer, the other two being Squirtle and Ivysaur. Like Pit and Meta Knight, Charizard is able to glide and jump multiple times in mid-air. However, Charizard's glide is somewhat less maneuverable than those of Pit and Meta Knight.

Charizard has a surprisingly fast running speed (tied with Pikachu), though he is true to his speed stat in the Pokémon games. However, he has one of the slowest walking speeds in the game. He is the fifth heaviest character. Charizard cannot be used by the Pokémon Trainer in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary until he battles and captures the pokemon.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Fast running speed; fastest running speed for a heavyweight in the game (compared to other heavyweights such as Bowser)
  • Two midair Jumps.
  • Can Glide.
  • Has a Meteor Smash.
  • High-damaging, moderate-ranged attacks.
  • Rock Smash has huge knockback and damage, and can also block projectiles.
  • Hard to KO due to heaviness.
  • Down Throw can KO at high percents.
  • Up Special Move gives Super Armor Frames.
  • Up aerial is quick, can juggle well, and works well with its multiple jumps.
  • Good aerial movement.
  • Can be switched with Ivysaur or Squirtle as the situation may require.
  • Long range, powerful tilt attacks.

Cons:

  • Very slow walk speed.
  • Lacks a quick, high-knockback finisher.
  • Glide is slow.
  • Large target.
  • Easy character to combo & juggle.
  • Some attacks are slow.
  • Up Special has short range.
  • Pokémon Change is easily punishable and is mandatory due to the stamina mechanic and the fact that Charizard is replaced by Squirtle if KO'd.
  • Sinks in water very quickly.
