Unusually, ''Smash 4'' features Masterpieces of Game Boy titles, which were not supported by the Wii U's Virtual Console. As a result, players are told about how they could download the two Game Boy titles, ''Kirby's Dream Land'' and ''Dr. Mario'', on the Nintendo 3DS's Virtual Console.

While the Wii Shop Channel and the Nintendo eShop (on both the Wii U and 3DS family) have been discontinued, the demos can still be played in their respective games (Brawl and Smash 4). And by extension, Smash 4 still links the player to the Nintendo eShop at the end of the demo (and thus, the message still tells them about how the full version can be purchased for the Virtual Console). However, the player will find the Nintendo eShop on both the Wii U and 3DS family discontinued (despite the demo's conclusion).
