"That's the point"Edit

I understand the humor, but I still maintain that it can give implications of the fact that the template should not be used for the purpose of interwiki linking. Furthermore, Toomai, when saying, "That's the point," implied that it shouldn't. Can someone please explain why it should not be used for interwiki linking? I am of the rather strong opinion that one should not use X (designed for X) for Y just because it happens to work for Y. I'd have to hear a majority say otherwise before I don't discourage it. Toomai Glittershine   The Obfuscating 21:01, 18 December 2012 (EST)
I prefer to think of something like this as "serendipity." After all, that's where penicillin, Popsicles, and potato chips came from! Air Conditioner   Goo goo g'joob. 21:04, 18 December 2012 (EST)
Serendipity is all well and good, and it's not like the syntax will suddenly change and break one of the two usages, but it still rather bugs me to use one template to do two jobs that happen to be similar. Toomai Glittershine   The Trumpeteer 21:09, 18 December 2012 (EST)

There is built-in formatting for thisEdit

Simply typing SmashWiki:About will have the same result: About
Also works for interwiki: wikipedia:Creme brulee results in Creme brulee - Ceci n’est pas un Smiddle. 10:59, 12 June 2013 (EDT)

That gets force-converted into the long version when the edit is saved though, which can be annoying in some cases. Toomai Glittershine   The Awesome 11:25, 12 June 2013 (EDT)

"W" templateEdit

While this template's purpose is to link stuff like RecentChanges into special, some people use it for interwiki links as well. This causes problems with links like Donkey Kong, which, when typed as mariowiki, links not to the game page, but rather a disambiguation page.

That's why I'm proposing the "W" template. It would work along the lines of this:

mariowiki

Coding (I think this is how it would work; correct me if I'm wrong):

{}

That way, a link like Donkey Kong would actually link to the game page, not a disambiguation page. It makes sense, considering people do not get the purpose of this template and think that this template will link to every interwiki link, which isn't true.

So, should this be implemented? Rtzxy   Reflect! 17:33, 7 December 2014 (EST)

I think this is worth a try. Call it "iw" instead of "w" though. Toomai Glittershine   The Incomprehensible 18:03, 7 December 2014 (EST)
All right, I'll attempt to make the template. Rtzxy   Reflect! 18:14, 7 December 2014 (EST)

Dissolving IW into SEdit

A recent change to this template has made it so that the S template functions identically to the IW template, which was done with no previous warning. As this could be a possible consensus issue, I thought of reverting it, but since at least one edit was already made with this change in mind, it would be a bigger hassle than it deserves to be currently. I'm starting a discussion on the talk page so this can be discussed properly before taking any action.

The main question is if people accept this change to the template, dissolving IW to S and deleting the former once all instances are changed to the latter. Since the structure of either template are currently identical, setting up a bot to do the work once consensus is reached shouldn't be a problem. I personally don't mind the change, since the difference between S and IW, as opposed to between S and B, isn't really enough to warrant separate templates.   Nokii — 11:41, 26 December 2018 (EST)
