In addition to stages being dark (only battlefield so far) and light green, we could have dark and light blue for reconfirmed and new gameplay mechanics respectively, and grey for "silly pictures with no new info" that sakurai posted a lot of early on. ::::The current setup uses orange for newcomers, aqua for veterans, green for stages, blue for assist characters, yellow for items, and magenta for other notable things. I'm not a fan of using dark/light shades of the same colour because faded dark colours tend to look odd against faded light ones and stand out much more. I also don't think it's necessary to distinguish old and new stages, items, or assists; characters are really the one everyone wants to distinguish.
