Upon ''Ultimate's'' release, Sonic has been seen as not as viable as in ''Smash 4'' due Spindash no longer being able to be shield canceled and no longer crossing up shield, up air failing to connect at times and Spin Charge's inconsistent ability to knock opponents upward with the jump, with the former being arguably his worst change. This has led to a mixed reception of him and was seen as a mid tier in general.
While Sonic overall continues to be seen as a mid tier, he retained his superb mobility, long distanced recovery and combo game has gotten notable placements in tournaments courtesy of Sonido, Wrath and especially KEN. Despite these results, his viability is still up for debate.

<!--If you are planning to add a player you consider to be notable, please provide tournament results in some shape or form in the edit summary (be it a link to a results thread or bracket of placing high in a tournament of other notable players or a video of them beating a notable player). Winning tournaments without notable players present is generally not enough to warrant a spot.-->
