Hi. I got Melee a couple weeks ago, and I'm still practicing. I'm pretty good at Brawl, but I'm not very good at Melee. Perhaps a pro at the game could help me out. :First tip: if you're looking to play top level, don't pick your main just yet. Get a feel for the advanced techniques and the physics of the game, then try out different characters. I was maining Young Link until I learned the more advanced move, then realized Marth was better for me. :The best way to learn to short hop is to practice hitting the X button on the very edge. If done right, your finger will slip off the side of the button as you hit it and you will short hop. Memorize the position of this versus a normal jump and you will get there eventually.
