The truth behind her mother's death is eventually revealed. while initially ruled a suicide, her death was actually an assassination coordinated by Masayoshi Shido, who perceived her as a potential threat and needed her eliminated. The deed was carried out by Goro Akechi, who used the metaverse incident caused by Yaldaboath as a distraction to take out all of his targets at once. A suicide note was then forged as a red herring, which was read aloud to Futaba for no other reason then as an act of cruelty. After realizing this, the phantom thieves go after Shido, hijacking a broadcasting system to tell the world of his true self.
