Mr. Game & Watch's first appearance was in the Game & Watch Series (1980), created by Gunpei Yokoi. However, he wasn't given a name until SSBM, and his obscurity took many by surprise.

Mr. Game & Watch is unlocked by clearing Target Test with all twenty five characters, or alternatively, by playing 1,000 VS. Matches.

Clearing Classic Mode with Mr. Game & Watch will unlock Flat Zone, a level that takes place in a giant Game & Watch.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Small and can crouch under projectiles
  • Has many strong killers
  • Can chain throw with each of his throws
  • Can combo characters fairly well
  • Huge vertical recovery distance
  • High range and large hitbox on many of his attacks (for example, his neutral aerial has higher range than any other nair)

Cons

  • Very light weight, thus is able to be killed easily
  • Can be comboed fairly easily
  • Predictable recovery, has trouble sweet-spotting the edge
  • Has a very poor roll and sidestep, crippling his defensive game
