Meta Knight was confirmed as a veteran playable character on August 13th, 2014. He can no longer glide, denying him one of his many recovery methods. He has been visually updated with his glove now having armored gauntlets, a detail seen in official artwork of Meta Knight in ''Kirby: Squeak Squad'' and ''Kirby Super Star Ultra.''

Due to his dominance in ''Brawl'', Meta Knight has been significantly nerfed from ''Brawl'' to ''Smash 4''. He is not as powerful as he was in ''Brawl'', because many of his notable overwhelming traits have been removed. Many of his attacks are slightly slower, and his range has been noticeably shortened, forcing him to take a more aggressive play style. He has lost the ability to glide, toning down his recovery. [[Mach Tornado]], a staple in ''Brawl,'' has less momentum and higher ending lag, removing his dominance in the neutral game. These changes have also left him more vulnerable to camping strategies.

Meta Knight still has numerous strengths. He has retained many of his combos from ''Brawl,'' and he continues to possess a deadly edgeguarding game. He has received several buffs to his KO moves as well. As a result, he has a powerful punishing ability. Even with the loss of many of his advantages, his strengths heavily outweigh his flaws, and he has secured strong tournament representation and noteworthy results, being one of the few characters to have won a national major. In the current meta game, Meta Knight is considered by many professionals, including Abadanago and ESAM, to be a potent top-tier, as well as one of the best characters in the game.
