This stage is loosely based {{s|mariowiki|Cavern of the Metal Cap}}, a secret area in ''{{s|supermariowiki|Super Mario 64}}'' that can be accessed by jumping into a pool of liquid metal hidden behind a set of double doors in the Underground Lake area of the {{s|mariowiki|Hazy Maze Cave}} stage. Upon entering the cavern, [[Mario]] will transform into his [[metal]] power-up form for a short time. Hitting the Metal Cap switch will activate the [[Metal Box]]es on the game, which will Mario to transform into Metal Mario by breaking them.

This stage features elements from the Cavern of the Metal Cap, such as the setting (which takes place in an underground area decorated with glimmering crystals), and the platforms and wire walls (which match those found in the Hazy Maze Cave).
