Waddle Dees first appeared in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land]]'' and started appearing in just about every game after that. They have no true form of attacking: they just walk around and sometimes leap into the air. However, they damage Kirby on contact. Because they're so weak, most Waddle Dees stay out of Kirby's way and just walk around peacefully.

For the most part, Waddle Dees behave the same way in each game. However, many variations of the species exist, such as [[Waddle Doo]]s. In some cases, Waddle Dee exists as a playable character as well, such as {{s|wikirby|Bandana Waddle Dee}}, an ally to [[Kirby]] in several games.

In the [[Subspace Emissary]], Waddle Dees appear in the last scene of [[The Battlefield Fortress]], where {{SSBB|Luigi}} is frightened by their presence. Suddenly, Luigi is attacked from behind by King Dedede, making him become a trophy. King Dedede places Luigi on the road as a bait for {{SSBB|Wario}}, who is coming down the road. Wario is ambushed by several Waddle Dees while Dedede steals his [[Cargo]] and the trophies. If Kirby swallows a parasol, he'll get one he can use to float or ward off enemy attacks. On the other hand, Kirby can't copy anything by swallowing Waddle Dees themselves.

Waddle Dees no longer appear in King Dedede's side special, which has been replaced with the new move [[Gordo Toss]] which exclusively throws [[Gordo]]s. They have also been removed from Dedede's Final Smash, as Waddle Dee Army has been replaced with the new [[Dedede Burst]]. Their only appearance with King Dedede is his on-screen appearance, and in one of his victory poses. A Waddle Dee pattern is also embroidered on King Dedede's clothes in his green [[alternate costume]].

Waddle Dees appear as harmless enemies, where they just walk around and occasionally jump. [[Parasol Waddle Dee]]s also appear.

Waddle Dees return as part of King Dedede's on-screen appearance and victory animation. Additionally, a Waddle Dee appears as a [[spirit]], as does the character Bandana Waddle Dee as that spirit’s enhanced form.

**It also makes them the only Smash Run enemy not to have a trophy. However, Parasol Waddle Dee appears as a trophy.
