It is the home stage of Samus Aran. This is also where Captain Falcon is fought to be unlocked after clearing 1P mode in under 20 minutes so it is also technically his home stage as well.
This is Samus' stage. It is also considered Captain Falcon's stage, as he is fought here to be unlocked.

Planet Zebes consists of a rough, jagged base, three main platforms (one of which is sloped at an angle), and a smaller platform ascending and descending to the far right of the stage. Hazardous acid surges below, periodically submerging most of the base and two of the three main platforms, though never rising high enough to reach the topmost platform.

Touching the acid results in damage and high knockback, capably KOing a player if their damage meter is high. The acid can, however, also be used strategically as a means of salvage when risen enough; in the event a player is knocked off the stage and into the acid, it will launch them skyward, allowing them to reuse their recovery or simply fall back onto the stage. Obtaining a Starman (or any form of strong knockback resistance) grants invulnerability to the acid, allowing the player to walk through it with no obstruction. However, if, while invincible, the player falls off the stage and through the acid, they will self-destruct; the acid will not "bump" the player back up, as they are immune to its burn.

The stage is commonly banned in N64 Backroom tournaments, mostly because of the acid that interferes with usual gameplay, due to being able to star KO at unexpected moments and covering up parts of the stage, forcing opponents to run and jump to avoid it. This can also cause the fighting space on the stage to become extremely small. In addition, the occasionally awkward camera angles making gameplay more difficult for most. However, the stage is sometimes allowed in non-official tournaments on behalf of its size, ideal for aerial combos. It is also occasionally allowed as a counterpick over Peach's Castle due to the larger size.

Comparison to Brinstar
Origin
Some stages in Smash 64, while not directly returning, were recycled or heavily modified for Melee, Planet Zebes and Brinstar being one such example.

According to the original Super Smash Bros. website, Planet Zebes occupies "an extremely unstable space station." Although not drawing homage to any particular game, this stage is based on metroidwiki, the planet on which metroidwiki and metroidwiki are set. A clear reference is the yellow acid featured in some rooms in Metroid. The rising and falling acid is a reference to Super Metroid, wherein the lava in some Norfair and Tourian rooms would rise after earthquakes. The stage's platforms, composed of green bubbles with red highlights, are a direct reference to the aesthetics of Norfair in both games.

Similarities
metroidwiki, a reoccurring boss appearing in the majority of Metroid games, occasionally flies in the background, as do metroidwikis. Both Ridley and the Wavers are based on their sprites in Super Metroid.
*Both have rising and falling pools of acid.
*Brinstar's acid moves in an identical pattern to Zebes'.
*The music is the same tune, though Brinstar's is a cover version.

Differences
clrl
*Brinstar, in retrospect, is much smaller than Zebes.
*The two platforms adorning either side of Brinstar are constrained by fleshy stalks that can be broken if attacked, having the platforms slope at sharp angles.
*There is no small ascending and descending platform in Brinstar like there is in Planet Zebes.
*Brinstar's acid deals significantly less knockback compared to Zebes', and won't KO outside of extreme percentages.

There are several other minor details. A cluster of organic material conjoins the base of Brinstar and splits the stage in two when destroyed. Also, Ridley is no longer seen flying in the background, but is instead replaced with a giant throbbing alien organism, as well as a Chozo Statue that occasionally gets up and roams about.
Tournament legality
The stage is commonly banned in N64 Backroom tournaments, largely due to the acid's interference with gameplay; star KOing at unexpected moments, covering up parts of the stage, and forcing opponents to avoid the acid causes the fighting space on the stage to become extremely small. Additionally, the sometimes awkward camera can make gameplay unnecessarily difficult. However, the stage is occasionally allowed in non-official tournaments for its large size, making it an ideal choice for aerial combos and a counterpick to Peach's Castle.

This stage is purportedly inspired by the Brinstar area of Planet Zebes in Metroid, however the only clear reference is the yellow acid featured in some rooms harmful to the player upon falling in. Metroid II: Return of Samus would also have acid hinder the player from further excavating the planet's depths, to which killing enough Metroids starts an earthquake and sinks the acid, allowing safe progression. Contrarily, toward the end of Super Metroid, in Mother Brain's room an earthquake occurs and acid begins to rise. While originating in Metroid, the acid on the Planet Zebes stage rises and falls flippantly, potentially referencing both Metroid II and Super Metroid.

Corresponding to typical Metroid platforming, the stage does appear suspended amidst a large vertical shaft; its background textures also seem borrowed from that of Super Metroid. The music is based on the recurring main "Brinstar" theme originally heard in Metroid.

Planet Zebes (惑星ゼーベス, Planet Zebes) serves as the lone Metroid installment stage for Super Smash Bros. Its environment rapidly changes due to the rising and falling acid.

This is Samus' stage. It is also considered Captain Falcon's stage, as he is fought here to be unlocked.

Stage overview[edit]

The acid at full height, leaving only the topmost platform safe to stand on.

Wavers and Ridley can occasionally be observed in the background.

Origin[edit]

A room in Brinstar from Metroid featuring yellow acid.

According to the original Super Smash Bros. website, Planet Zebes occupies "an extremely unstable space station." Although not drawing homage to any particular game, this stage is based on Zebes, the planet on which Metroid and Super Metroid are set.

Ridley, a reoccurring boss appearing in the majority of Metroid games, occasionally flies in the background, as do Wavers. Both Ridley and the Wavers are based on their sprites in Super Metroid.

Tournament legality[edit]

The stage is commonly banned in N64 Backroom tournaments, largely due to the acid's interference with gameplay; star KOing at unexpected moments, covering up parts of the stage, and forcing opponents to avoid the acid causes the fighting space on the stage to become extremely small. Additionally, the sometimes awkward camera can make gameplay unnecessarily difficult. However, the stage is occasionally allowed in non-official tournaments for its large size, making it an ideal choice for aerial combos and a counterpick to Peach's Castle.
