Melee|Melee]], and is often [[Banned stage|banned]] in standard [[Tournaments|tournaments]] for its interference with [[gameplay]] though in a few tournaments it is allowed as the size of the stage is perfect for aerial combos while not being too large.

Planet Zebes consists of a rough, jagged base, three main platforms (one of which is sloped at an angle), and a smaller platform ascending and descending to the far right of the stage. Hazardous acid surges below, periodically submerging most of the base and two of the three main platforms, though never rising high enough to reach the topmost platform.


Wavers as well as [[Ridley]] can occasionally be seen flying in the background.
Touching the acid results in [[damage]] and high [[knockback]], capably [[KO]]ing a player if their damage meter is high. The acid can, however, also be used strategically as a means of salvage when risen enough; in the event a player is knocked off the stage and into the acid, it will launch them skyward, allowing them to reuse their [[recovery]] or simply fall back onto the stage. Obtaining a {{b|Starman|item}} (or any form of strong knockback resistance) grants invulnerability to the acid, allowing the player to walk through it with no obstruction. It is the home stage of Samus Aran. This is also the stage where Captain Falcon is fought when being unlocked (this could be because both characters are bounty hunters and come from science fiction game series).

According to the original ''Super Smash Bros.'' website, Planet Zebes occupies "an extremely unstable space station." Although not drawing homage to any particular game, this stage is based on {{s|metroidwiki|Zebes}}, the planet on which ''{{iw|metroidwiki|Metroid|game}}'' and ''{{s|metroidwiki|Super Metroid}}'' are set. A clear reference is the yellow acid featured in some rooms in ''Metroid''. The rising and falling acid is a reference to ''Super Metroid'', wherein the lava in some Norfair and Tourian rooms would rise after earthquakes. The stage's platforms, composed of green bubbles with red highlights, are a direct reference to the aesthetics of Norfair in both games.

There are several other minuter details.  A cluster of organic material conjoins the base of Brinstar and splits the stage in two when destroyed.  Also, Ridley is no longer seen flying in the background, but is instead replaced with a giant throbbing alien organism, as well as a [[Chozo Statue]] that occasionally gets up and roams about.

This stage is based of the area Brinstar that is on the Planet Zebes from ''[[Metroid (game)|Metroid]]''. However, the only significant reference to ''[[Metroid (game)|Metroid]]'' is the yellow acid. In ''Metroid's'' Brinstar there are some rooms which feature yellow acid on the ground. If the player goes in the acid it does some damage. In ''Metroid II: The Return of Samus'' there are times where acid is in the way of the player's path. If the player kills enough [[Metroid (creature)|Metroids]] an earthquake occurs and the acid goes down. Towards the end of ''[[Super Metroid]]'', in Mother Brain's room an earthquake occurs and acid starts rising up. While the acid in this stage originated in Metroid, the acid going up and down after an earthquake could be a reference to either ''Metroid II'' or ''Super Metroid'' (perhaps more likely ''Super Metroid'' as ''Metroid II'' is set on planet SR388 while ''Super Metroid'' is set on Planet Zebes).

Planet Zebes (惑星ゼーベス, Planet Zebes) serves as the lone Metroid installment stage for Super Smash Bros. Its environment rapidly changes due to the rising and falling acid.

This is Samus' stage. It is also considered Captain Falcon's stage, as he is fought here to be unlocked.

According to the original Super Smash Bros. website, Planet Zebes occupies "an extremely unstable space station." A clear reference is the yellow acid featured in some rooms in Metroid. The rising and falling acid is a reference to Super Metroid, wherein the lava in some Norfair and Tourian rooms would rise after earthquakes.
