Article on Kingdom Hearts Wiki Sora

Sora is the main protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series.

Origin

Hailing from the Destiny Islands, a small tropical archipelago, Sora was born and immediately made contact with a unconscious Ventus. Offering to tether their hearts together to save Ventus, Sora was able to repair Ventus's station, but in return, cause the dark part of Ventus, Vanitas, to bear his face. After Vanitas is destroyed by Ventus, Sora offers to give Ventus a place in his heart so he could sleep.

Sora would continue to live peacefully with his friends Kairi and Riku, and other children such as Tidus and Wakka (from Final Fantasy X), and Selphie (from Final Fantasy VIII). The trio of friends desired to explore other worlds, so they built a raft to sail away from the Destiny Islands. The night before their voyage however, a strange darkness overtook the islands, and creatures known as the Heartless appeared. Sora was granted a magical Keyblade in order to fight the Heartless, and found himself thrown through the universe.

Awaking in a place called Traverse Town, Sora teamed up with Donald Duck and Goofy to find his friends, as well as King Mickey. Together, they would venture through various worlds in order to save the universe from the Heartless, led by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. One of these adventures ends with him sacrificing himself to save Riku and Kairi, which ends with the birth of both his heartless an his Nobodies, which is named Roxas and looks exactly like Ventus. Sora was able to return to his normal form and save the day.

While looking for his friends that were still missing, Sora ends up in Castle Oblivion, where his memories immediatley begin to fade. While trying to figure out what is going on, Sora runs into several members of Organization XIII that both try to stop and help him along the way. He also comes across a girl named Naminé, who is Kairi's nobody. She agrees to help restore Sora's memories, but needs him to be put into a coma for one year to make sure he is fully restore.

While all of this was happening, Roxas becomes an Organization member and is put to various tasks. He also makes friends with a girl named Xion, who is not a traditional Nobody, but a puppet created around Sora's memories. Xion is eventually forced by the Organization to kill Roxas and absorb him to become a "complete" Sora, though Roxas defeats her. Roxas then realizes that he must cease to exist in order for Sora to regain his memories. After some initial resistance, Roxas is eventually captured and put into a fake where where he can live happily until his time comes. He eventually sees Sora and willingly accepts his demise for the greater good.

Sora, now awake with all of his memories intact, sets out on another adventure to take down the Organization members and their new leader, Xemnas. It is eventually revealed that Ansem and Xemnas's actions revolved around a plot led by Xehanort to reenact the long ancient Keyblade War. In order to becoming stronger, Sora and Riku take the mark of mastery exam to become master Keyblade wielders. While only Riku becomes a master, Sora is still believed to be the one destined to save the day. Vowing to stop Xehanort, Sora manages to save Aqua from the Realm of Darkness, and uses the "power of waking" on Ventus at the Land of Departure. Together with Donald, Goofy, Mickey, Kairi, Riku, and Lea, they head to the Keyblade Graveyard to fight Xehanort's clones and his subordinates.

Although the group manages to save Terra and Xion from Xehanort's grasp, and restore Roxas and his heart, Xemnas kidnaps Kairi and delivers her to Xehanort, who promptly destroys her after the group defeats the last of Xehanort's subordinates in order to craft the χ-blade. Using all their strength, Sora, Donald, and Goofy manages to defeat Xehanort and stop his plot to reignite the Keyblade War. Sora then traveled into The Final World in order to save Kairi, but at the cost of being lost forever. The ultimate fate of Sora is currently unknown.

Trivia

  • Sora is the third fighter in the Smash Bros. franchise to be owned by a company that does not specialize primarily in game development, after Banjo & Kazooie and Steve (all of whom are owned by Microsoft), that being The Walt Disney Company.
  • Sora is the first character from a Square Enix developed game to be fully voiced in English, as Cloud, Hero, and Sephiroth are only voiced by their Japanese voice actors (Takahiro Sakurai, Mitsuki Saiga, and Toshiyuki Morikawa), in place of their English actors (Steve Burton, Rasmus Hardicker, and George Newburn).
  • Sora coincidentally shares his name with Sakurai’s company which Sakurai himself acknowledged.
