Goldeen is a somewhat small, white-and-red goldfish with a horn. As stated by the Pokédex, it is a very beautiful specie with fins that billow elegantly in water like a ballroom dress, earning it its nicknames, the Water Queen and the "water dancer". Its dorsal and pectoral fins are strongly developed like muscles, so it can swim upstream at a steady 5 knots. It loves swimming wild and free in rivers and ponds. If it senses danger, it rams powerfully with its sharp horn, so one should not let their guard down around it. If it is placed in an aquarium, it will shatter even the thickest glass with one ram of its horn and make its escape. During the spawning season, they swim gracefully in the water, searching for their perfect mates, and when it is time for them to lay eggs in the springtime, schools of Goldeen can be seen swimming up rivers and falls in large groups.

The role Goldeen plays in the ''Smash Bros.'' series should not be confused with its role in the ''Pokémon'' games; there, it possesses more attacks. Magikarp, another fish Pokémon, would match Goldeen's role in the ''Smash'' games perfectly, as it can only use "Splash" (a move which does absolutely nothing) until it evolves into Seeking. Goldeen, however, can't even learn "Splash" except as an Egg Move.

The Goldeen in ''Smash Bros'' appears to be more akin to a recurring gag in the original Pokémon TV series, in which the character Misty had a Goldeen that couldn't fight at all when it was summoned on dry land. Interestingly, the same series also provided the above worthless depictions of Magikarp. Why the designers chose Goldeen remains a mystery.
