Controls test is a basic stage that allows players to test their set custom controls. As such, it cannot be selected in Versus mode. It also shares a similarity with Custom stage tests, in that Mario is the only character that can be used on it.
The controls test stage or customization test stage is a basic stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4 that allows players to test their set custom controls or (in Smash 4 only) character customizations. As such, it cannot be selected in Versus mode. In the controls test version, only Mario is playable. In the customization test version, the player can test any fighter they are customizing.

Controls test stage consists solely of one grounded platform, using the same texture as the Online Practice Stage, and two invisible, blank walls at either side, which can be wall jumped from. This also means that the blast lines at either side are completely inaccessible. The top blast line is accessible, though as Mario does not have any moves capable of damaging himself, he cannot be KO'd without a hack to access the stage in a Versus mode.
The stage consists of a single flat strip of terrain with a simple texture. On either side of the stage is an invisible wall that prevents the player from reaching the blast lines. These walls can be wall jumped from and wall clinged on, but do not interact with projectiles. These walls, combined with an invisible ceiling just above the camera boundary, make it impossible for the player to be KO'd on the test stage.

When the player presses a button(s), a small notice will appear in the top right corner, containing an icon for the button, as well as its function.
On the controls test stage, pressing buttons will cause a small notice to appear on screen, containing an icon for button and its currently assigned function. In for3ds, controls can be customized using the bottom screen while the player is in the test stage. In Brawl and forwiiu, controls are set on a separate screen.

On the customization test stage, a Sandbag is present for the player to test out their attacks on, and its damage is displayed on screen. The Sandbag's damage percentage will reset to zero if it does not sustain any damage for a few seconds. Due to the invisible walls, the Sandbag cannot be knocked out of bounds as on the Online Practice Stage.
