This attack originates from ''{{s|wikipedia|Street Fighter IV}}''. Every fighter has a special Focus Attack that, when fully charged, becomes unblockable and stuns the opponent for a short time and is powerful. The black "aura" and ink-like trail Ryu's fist creates upon releasing the attack fits the style of said game as well, as most attacks make ink or paint trails while fighters attack. It is inputted with using both a medium punch and medium kick at the same time.

The fighter is also given super armor for the duration of the charge-up. They can be disrupted by getting hit more than once by any move, or by getting hit once with an armor-breaking move, such as a [[Tatsumaki Senpukyaku]]. They may also dash out of the charging animation. The term FADC, while used in both ''SFIV'' and ''SSB4'', comes from a different mechanic where certain attacks may be cancelled into a Focus Attack at the cost of one half of the Super Gauge, which can then be dashed out of into another attack, thus cancelling the move into a Focus Attack Dash. Cancelling a special move with it causes it to become an EX Focus/Saving Attack instead, making it cost two super gauge bars while making it lose its super armor, but allows the use of FADC (Focus Attack Dash Cancelling) to string together attacks with the use of this method (such as cancelling a special move this way into neutral state after the dash for more followups).

The latest version of ''SFIV'', known as ''Ultra Street Fighter 4'', introduces the Red Focus Attack (AKA the Red Saving Attack in Japanese), a Focus Attack that is used with the usual command plus the light punch button that makes the user glow red during its period, as well as having infinite super armor that is still susceptible to throws and armor-breaks. The Red Focus Attack also deals 50% more damage than a normal Focus Attack, as well as costing three super gauge bars instead of two, even for the EX version which can crumple even without charging it up to later stages (allowing for more characters to setup combos even into their Ultra Combos). However, dash-cancelling a Red Focus Attack isn't as viable especially for a FADC-styled tactic due to wasting more resources while also missing out on extra damage.
