A '''Bucculus''' is an enemy in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Subspace Emissary]] mode, and first appears in the [[The Lake]] level. A Bucculus looks like a plant with large, red lips and a purple poison zone on the back that looks like a strawberry. It appears as lips on the ground. If one goes near it, it will pop up and attack by kissing the player, filling up its poison zone and causing damage. If a Bucculus misses its grab attack, it will bounce around. After a few seconds, it will plant itself again. If a Bucculus with a full poison zone is killed, it will most likely drop a [[Maxim Tomato]]. It can also drop [[Food]] otherwise. To turn a Bucculus into a trophy, use a [[Trophy Stand]] while it is bouncing around; be careful though, it can dodge it. You do not need to weaken a Bucculus to turn it into a trophy.

==Appearance==
''A [[Subspace Army]] enemy found firmly planted in the ground, with only its lips showing. These lips, by the way, are covered with spikes that stick in its victim to... (Get this!)...suck out vitality. Basically, this results in serious damage. The torso area has a poison zone where it stores vitality. The Bucculus not only looks offensive-- boy, it's rotten to the core.''
A Bucculus looks like a plant with large, red lips and a purple poison zone on the back that resembles a strawberry. It hides deep in the ground, with only its lips showing.

==In the Subspace Emissary==
It appears as red lips on the ground: if the player goes near it, it will pop up and attempt to stick to the character. Walking over it makes it likely to stick to the player, though this can be avoided by jumping over it or getting close enough to trigger it and preempt an attack, and most characters can run over it as well. When they jump out, they have a deceptively long-lasting hitbox, with decent reach above them, especially in later levels, so the player must jump clean over them. Once stuck, Bucculus will attack by kissing the player repeatedly to deal damage, filling up its "poison zone".

If a Bucculus misses its grab attack, it will bounce around and plant itself again after a few seconds. If a Bucculus with a filled poison zone is killed, it will most likely drop a [[Maxim Tomato]], but it could occasionally drop [[Food]] otherwise. The player does not need to weaken an "empty" Bucculus to turn it into a [[trophy]] with a [[trophy stand]], since its base health is always very low (even on Intense).

Although the player is unable to move with a stuck Bucculus on them, they can [[button mash]] to make the Bucculus break away. Bucculus will then run and try to plant itself again in the ground. A Bucculus will naturally break away after three hits. It will do a small amount of damage when it is popped off, regardless of if the player mashes or it does so naturally.

==Trivia==
==Trivia==
*This monster may be based on the Succubus, a mythological monster from medieval times, a demon who seduced men to steal their life energy.
*Bucculus' name is likely a corruption of succubus, with its signature attack referencing their portrayal in media as beings which suck the life-force from their victims.
*It's possible it's based on Leap, an enemy from the [[Kirby series]]. However, Leap hovers off the ground with wings
*When a Bucculus sucks a character's [[Health|vitality]], it makes a [[slash]]ing sound and animation.
*On lower difficulties, players can heal themselves with a Bucculus by letting it sap their health for a bit and then knocking it out to receive a Maxim Tomato, potentially allowing the player heal for more than they received.
*Bucculus attacks in a similar way to {{s|wikirby|Leap}}, an enemy from ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby & The Amazing Mirror}}''. The differences are that Bucculus inflicts more damage and it resides underground rather than in the air.
*In [[Subspace (Part II)]], the translucent terrain allows the player to see the body of a Bucculus that is still buried. The same happens in [[The Great Maze]].
