I think this may have been specified in the past, but I strongly believe that Mario's black-and-white costume swap is the same swap based on Foreman Spike from the previous Smash entries. At first glance it may seem very different from Spike's sprite from ''Wrecking Crew'', the palette has become gradually more monochromatic with each ''Smash Bros.'' entry. :It seems pretty obvious to me that it is indeed based on Foreman Spike. Looks like it's evolved from Brown to Black, with each iteration making it more darker. Also, just a heads up, references shouldn't be on talk pages.
