Byleth (♂: ベレト, ♀: ベレス, Byleth) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and is the only Nintendo character in the Fighters Pass. Byleth's male and female versions were both officially announced on January 16th, 2020 as the fifth downloadable character and the final downloadable character for the first Fighters Pass. They will be released on January 28th, 2020 and are classified as Fighter #75.

Zach Aguilar and Jeannie Tirado will reprise their roles as the male and female versions in English, while Yūsuke Kobayashi and Shizuka Itō will reprise their male and female roles in Japanese.

Attributes

  • Like most other swordfighters, Byleth is designed to be a "distance demon". Their average reach is long due to their weapons.
    • To compensate for this, Byleth's mobility is slow (slightly faster than Robin) and their grabs have a short reach.
  • Byleth's main weapon is the Sword of the Creator, though they also utilize the Hero's Relics throughout their moveset:
  • Like Robin and Corrin, Byleth has a female variation as alternate costumes.

Moveset

  • The Sword of the Creator is utilized in their basic attacks and upward-inputted moves.
    • Neutral attack - a knifehand strike, followed by a roundhouse kick, followed by a flurry attack with the whip sword.
    • Dash attack - an inward swipe while sliding forward.
    • Forward tilt - an elegant downward strike.
    • Up tilt - swings their sword in an arc upwards and outwards over their head.
    • Down tilt - a low swipe with the whip sword.
    • Up smash - swings the whip sword upward, hitting multiple times.
    • Up aerial - swings the whip sword upward, hitting multiple times.
    • Up throw - shoves the opponent upward with his sword.
    • Byleth's up special has them fling the whip sword upwards, acting as a tether recovery. If it connects with an opponent, Byleth reels the opponent in and bounces off them. At higher percents, this bounce will meteor smash. Functions similarly to Joker's Grappling Hook.
  • Areadbhar has long range but is stronger at the tip. Except for the side special, these moves generally have precise hitboxes. It is utilized in Byleth's side-inputted moves.
    • Forward smash - stabs the lance forwards. Can be angled, though the upward-angled variation is the strongest.
    • Forward aerial - swings the lance forwards.
    • Back aerial - stabs the lance behind them.
    • Byleth's side special has them lunge forward while swinging the lance upwards with extreme range. Using a tapped input increases the distance Byleth travels.
  • Aymr is slow but its attacks are very powerful. Uses the same heavy sword sound effects as Ike's sword, Ragnell. It is utilized in Byleth's downward-inputted moves.
  • Failnaught is used for quick attacks. It is utilized in a few of Byleth's neutral moves.
    • Neutral aerial - spins the bow around them, similar to Pit's.
    • Byleth's neutral special has them fire an arrow. They can charge it for more speed and damage, change directions while charging, and can charge-cancel at a certain duration. Charging at its maximum duration will fire a powerful arrow like a beam of light. It must be charged a bit before it can be fired, similarly to how Bayonetta's neutral special can't be shield-canceled instantaneously and must charge first.
  • Back throw - Swings opponent around twice, throwing them behind on the second spin. Similar to Pac-Man's.

Alternate costumes

Byleth's recolors swap genders depending on the costume. Most of their recolors are based on other characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

  • Byleth's third, fourth, and fifth costume are based on the three main lords: Dimitri, Edelgard, and Claude.
  • Byleth's sixth costume is based on Sothis.
  • Byleth's seventh and eighth costumes are based on their appearance after merging with Sothis.

Trivia

  • Byleth is the only first-party character in the Fighters Pass, and the second first-party DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, after Piranha Plant.
  • With their debut in Three Houses in July 2019, Byleth is currently the most recent fighter to appear in Ultimate and, by extension, the entire Super Smash Bros. series.
  • Byleth is the fifth fighter to receive an invitation letter in their reveal trailer, after Villager, Isabelle, Joker, and Terry.
  • Byleth is the only character whose alternate costume is displayed alongside their default costume on the official Ultimate site, and is one of two characters in general to have this trait, with Robin's page on the official Smash 4 site similarly showing both genders, unlike other characters with alternate costumes.
    • Coincidentally, both are Fire Emblem characters.
  • Byleth is one of only four characters whose alternate costume has a different idle stance animation from the default costume, the other being Inkling, Pokémon Trainer, and the Koopalings.
  • Byleth is the first character with two different introduction taglines.
