With {{Sm|ZeRo}}'s absence from the ''Smash 4'' event due to medical issues, {{Sm|Abadango}} won his first major American tournament using {{SSB4|Mewtwo}}, a character generally considered to be mid [[tier]] at the time. {{Sm|Dabuz}} failed to make top eight while {{Sm|Nairo}} was eliminated early on at a disappointing 49th place, his worst placing at a major so far. {{Sm|Marss}} and {{Sm|Pink Fresh}} also notably placed 3rd and 7th, respectively. In the ''Melee'' event, {{Sm|Hungrybox}} took his third major in a row without dropping a set, losing only a single game to {{Sm|Mango}} in grand finals; Mango additionally fell to {{Sm|Hax}} in winners' semis, though he later ousted him in losers' finals. {{Sm|Swedish Delight}} and {{Sm|Laudandus}} both made unexpected top eight finishes while {{Sm|InfiniteNumbers}} placed 9th at his first-ever major, beating {{Sm|DJ Nintendo}}, {{Sm|Alex19}}, {{Sm|MacD}}, and {{Sm|Mike Haze}}; {{Sm|Axe}} and {{Sm|Westballz}} also suffered early losses, placing 25th and 33rd respectively.
