Topi (トッピー, Toppi) is a common enemy from the Ice Climber universe.

For the trophy, see Topi (trophy)
Origin
Topis appeared as enemies in Ice Climber. They would appear from either side of the stage and will try to prevent the Ice Climbers from scaling the mountain by pushing blocks of ice into the holes the duo created on the stage; furthermore, they could send the Ice Climbers falling down the stage if they ran into them. They could be defeated, but would respawn after some time.

Topis are common enemies from the Ice Climber universe that appear in Stage 10 of Adventure Mode. They also can come out of containers in other modes.
Topis had different appearances between the Japanese release of Ice Climber and the international release. In the international releases, Topis are small bipedal creatures that resemble small wikipedias and their whole body is covered in white fur. They have small legs and small arms that help them move around, with their mouths somewhat resembling beaks. In Japan, Topis instead appeared as blue seals; the change in appearance is assumed to be due to the controversy surrounding seal clubbing in the Western world. However, this yeti-like appearance has been carried over to Japan with VS. Ice Climber, an altered version released for arcades, and its Japan-only mariowiki port.

Appearance
The blocks of ice Topis pushed in Ice Climber are used for the Ice Climbers' Ice Shot.
Topis are about the size of Jigglypuff. They resemble small yetis and their whole body contains white fur. They have small legs and small arms that help them move around. The mouth of the Topis resembles a beak.

Function
<gallery>
Topis act as enemies and obstacles on the stages. Topis walk back and forth on the arena. Any character who makes contact with Topi will take damage. The damage the Topis cause varies on the difficulty the characters are using. On higher difficulties the Topis will cause more damage. The Topis have two different kind of movements. Most of the time Topis will walk normally on a stage. The Topis also have the ability to glide on a stage. Topis move at a faster pace when they glide. Characters will have a harder time to dodge Topis that are gliding. Topis sometimes can be seen with Freezies in stage 10 of Adventure Mode. They will also contain trophies when they are KO at rare times. They can be picked up by using the Z button and  can be thrown at other characters to cause damage. The character who is hit by a Topi will take about 30% damage and has the possibily of dying at low percentages.

Characters will be awarded 200 points for every Topi they KO.
Overview
In Melee, they can come out of container items.

Version difference
Like Ice Climber itself, Topis have differing appearances between the Japanese release of Melee and its later, international releases. In the original Japanese release, they resemble the blue seals of the Japanese version of Ice Climber, but they are instead the white, yeti-like creatures in international versions. The two versions function identically, and uniquely, the blue seals do not appear in the North American version even when the language is set to Japanese. The change was presumably due to controversy over seal hunting, though it is also possible that the change was merely to preserve the continuity of the Topis' appearances between regions.
Topis come in two varieties: the seal featured in the Japanese version and the small yeti seen in western copies. While early U.S. releases featured the seal design, they were redone as a more imaginary creature over concerns of animal cruelty (seal clubbing).

Topi made their debut in Super Smash Bros. Melee, acting as enemies in Stage 10: Icicle Mountain in the game's Adventure Mode. Any character who makes contact with them will take damage and knockback. Topis also have the ability to slide across platforms, making them move at a faster pace. On Icicle Mountain, they are often spotted with Freezies, despite the item not coming from the Ice Climber universe. Characters are awarded 200 points for every Topi they KO.

They were kept really busy, as Nana and Popo constantly cracked floors with single strikes of their ice hammers. Despite the monotony of their chilly work, these creatures never slacked off for an instant.
