Air dodges were revamped in ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'', containing both elements of ''Smash 4'' and ''Melee'''s air dodge system. Characters can dodge left or right to gain a momentum boost in that direction. Using it does not leave them in a helpless state. A new system placed on all dodge moves causes them to have less intangibility frames and slower speed if it is used too often in a short period of time.

In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, air dodges seem to function closer to Melee, now providing a directional boost again; however, it remains to be seen whether these changes result in the air dodge allowing players to wavedash again or not.
Unlike ''Melee'''s air dodging, directional air dodging shifts momentum and does not completely change it. It cannot be used to shift momentum vertically. Landing while dodging will create landing lag, just like the previous game. These make wavedashing impossible to perform.
