The original boxart depicted an in-game screenshot of Mario getting attacked by Bowser with his [[Fire Breath]] instead of showing Mario, Bowser, Link, and Pikachu fighting. The lighting on Hyrule Temple was also considerably brighter. While unused for the final game, this box art was used for some of the game's early promotional material, such as websites accepting orders for the game, Nintendo employee lanyard at events<ref>https://mobile.twitter.com/davidvkimball/status/1352339240256851968</ref>, and [[:File:MeleeWalMartAdvert.png|some print advertisements and retail catalogs]].
