Olimar returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. Aesthetically, his design is now based on his appearance in pikipedia: he has a pikipedia on the bottom of his helmet, the two top buttons on his spacesuit are blue instead of red, and both of his sleeves feature a pikipedia patch. Like the Koopalings, Alph from Pikmin 3 also appears as an alternate character; unlike them, he has his own alternate costumes, which reference fellow Pikmin 3 protagonists pikipedia and pikipedia, as well as Olimar himself. Olimar was the first veteran to be confirmed after those revealed at E3 2013.

Olimar was the first veteran to be confirmed after those revealed at E3 2013.

Olimar is currently ranked 21st on the tier list, placing him at the top of the C tier. He was notably nerfed, as the number of Pikmin he can have by his side was halved from six to three, which weakens his overall damage output and camping potential. However, he received various buffs in other areas, with the most beneficial one being Winged Pikmin replacing Pikmin Chain as his recovery move. In comparison to Pikmin Chain, Winged Pikmin is capable of much greater recovery distance, as it is not a tether. Other buffs include a more powerful forward tilt, typically stronger smash attacks, and faster forward and back aerials. Despite his nerfs, Olimar is still seen as a relatively viable choice for competitive play, and he has gained some decent representation.
Olimar has gained some useful buffs in his transition from Brawl to Smash 4. His recovery has been significantly improved which eliminates his biggest weakness from Brawl, as Winged Pikmin is far superior as a recovery move than Pikmin Chain due to being maneuverable in midair while also traveling a greater distance the less Pikmin Olimar has. This is supplemented by the removal of edgehogging and significantly improves Olimar's endurance, especially offstage. His White Pikmin now have more HP and deal more damage when used as standard attacks (although they are still extremely weak when used with standard moves so they should never be used for these moves if possible). Pikmin Pluck now plucks Pikmin in a set order instead of choosing the randomly based on terrain with the order being from Red -> Yellow -> Blue -> White -> Purple while Pikmin Throw now has increased latch time and the increased hitbox from non Purple Pikmin makes it easier for the Pikmin to latch onto the opponent. He has also gained a strong combo game thanks to the changes to hitstun cancelling and DI as well as the improvements to his down throw. His smash attacks have also received improvements - forward smash deals increased damage with its clean sweetspot hit when used with Red, Yellow, White, and Purple Pikmin and its clean sweetspot hit has stronger KO potential with all Pikmin, up smash deals more damage with Red, White, and Purple Pikmin, and down smash deals more damage with Red, Yellow, White, and Purple Pikmin and its hitbox duration with Purple Pikmin has been increased - altogether, this gives the attacks more consistency. Lastly, his throws have been given some improvements. His forward and back throws have increased knockback with Yellow and White Pikmin while the latter also has increased knockback with Red Pikmin. His down throw has also gained combo potential with with Red, Yellow, and Purple Pikmin.

However, while Olimar was granted many buffs, he has received several drastic nerfs that have significantly toned down his strengths. The most glaring nerf was that his Pikmin count has been halved as instead of being able to have six Pikmin at a time, he can now only have three. This significantly weakens his damage racking capabilities and camping game especially since Pikmin Throw deals less damage with all Pikmin and the Pikmin have flawed AI. Additionally, all non White Pikmin have less HP which makes them easier to KO and they are even easier to KO when they are seperated from Olimar. His aerials all generally deal less damage with his forward and down aerials being the most affected while his neutral and up aerial have decreased range. Despite his smash attacks receiving some buffs, they have received nerfs that considerably outweigh their buffs as forward smash has a shorter duration while down smash has weakened KO potential with all Pikmin despite its increased damage. His up smash however, which was one of his best moves in Brawl, has easily received the most detrimental downgrades of his smash attacks. It has more startup (frame 8 -> frame 12) along with much higher ending lag (FAF 33 -> FAF 56) which makes it slower and much less safe. Along with this, its duration has been shortened (frames 8-9 (clean)/10-12 (mid)/13-19 (late) → 12-13/14-16/17-22), its range has been reduced due to the move's reduced hitbox size as well as the Pikmin jumping lower, and its knockback with all Pikmin has been decreased which nerfs its KO power despite the increased damage. Lastly, all of his smash attacks can now be reflected.

His grab game has also been weakened. His grabs have a shorter duration and much less range as they are no longer the farthest reaching in the game with Blue Pikmin. His throws have also received nerfs to their KO power with Blue and Purple Pikmin making them much less useful and consistent as KO throws
with his up throw no longer being the strongest in the game. Finally, Pikmin Order has significantly less armor frames (frames 2-16 -> frames 6-12). This drastically weakens its use as a defensive tool and combo breaker as the move now requires much stricter timing and careful use to remain effective as the move does not grant Olimar the level of protection that it did in Brawl.

Olimar is currently ranked 21st of 58 on the tier list in the C tier. While this is a decent placement, it is a significant drop from his top tier placement in Brawl where he was ranked 3rd of 38. Olimar is still a good character with decent representation and results from players such as Dabuz, Shuton, and Myran. While his changes drastically improved his recovery, they have significantly toned down his key strengths as his damage racking potential, camping ability, defensive options, and grab game have all been considerably weakened while his KO potential has become more inconsistent. In the end, while he is still a viable character, he is far inferior to his Brawl counterpart.
